Rotary Cutter Bush Hog Gear Box Leaking

IF you have the cutter leveled side to side, and the front is a couple inches off the ground, and you expect it to "never" scrape the ground, then you are using the wrong cutter.

It's a "field" mower, not a "lawn" mower with anti scalp wheels on it!

Yes Rob I realize it's a field mower and I am mowing fields with it -- I just wondered whether it was something I was doing wrong in forwards operation that was the main cause. I have learned to live with it, I just "thought" it was supposed to skid on top of the ground rather than dig into it. Whenever I cut backwards everything just rides on the top of the ground smoothly and yes I realize that that's because there are no edges to cut in. If what I'm doing is normal then all is fine. I was just asking if that was normal or not. Thanks.

My Bush Hog started leaking badly. It's an 8 footer with side shift. 3 gearboxes.
Bottom seal went on one. It was more than I'm willing to spend for the repair of a 20 year old machine. I'm only mowing about 3-4 acres. I was just going to buy a 6foot 3pth replacement.
Until I found the right deal on a new one I packed the offending gearbox with a collection of old greases I had in the barn. Some the old man must have bought in the 50s. Two summers now and no problems.
Maybe if you're mowing on a large scale, but on a small acreage I've had ZERO issues using grease.

like rob says the front of your mower is to low raise it up a couple inches, they will still dig in on corners sometimes, but it should not be digging in just going forward

We had a late 1970ish model Ford bush hog that we sold last year. It leaked for thirty years. Every year before first use I would put a tube of regular grease in the gearbox. Then fill it up with the 90-wt gear oil. Just check the level and top it off every couple days of use or if it has been sitting for a week or so. That thing had been used and abused, welded, bolted, chained, and braced together many times. Top nearly rusted thru. And the gearbox finally locked up on me. Still got $150 for it at auction.
