building a chimney question

/ building a chimney question #21
Just had the chimney sweep out too my place and was going to peruse the old threads, but this seems like a good place to ask.

Someone has "lined" my old chimney with regular stovepipe. Chimney sweep said it was dangerous and not the right way to do it, although more common then it should be. Think he called it the "poor mans relining". Unfortunately, I think I agree with him, it would be just like every other part of the house.. :)

Anyway, he suggested Stainless Steel liner, with poured in insualtion around it. His quote was $1500

Looking on the net I think I can do the same for about $700 or so, which would be about half so that makes sense too me.

Anyone done this? Spiral flexible continuous better then the solid? Tips, suggestions, tricks?

We have a stainless steel flexible liner inserted into our chimney which has a tile flue surrounded by brick. There is no filler between the liner and the original chimney.:D

Local regulation may dictate how it is done and who may do it.

Sorry,no pictures........I'm prob. one of the last people in the world who does'nt have a digital camera........yet.I'm waiting for the old Cannon 35mm
to break.Yeah,i'm that cheap.:D
Digger2

I bought my Cannon AE1 in 1985, just before going overseas. I took tens of thousands of pictures with it, and it never let me down. Truly one of the best cameras ever.

But for the last five years, I think I only took one or two rolls pictures with it and even then, it took me months to develop the film. This last fall, I sold it with my lenses and filters for $100. Felt like I was giving it away, but pretty soon, that will be the only thing I could have done with it.

Digital is just so much better in so many ways. My wife and I were just talking about it the other day. We take dozens of pictures of something and don't even think about it. If they all turn out bad, it's nothing to just delete them. But with lots of pictures, you sometimes get a great one!!! With film, that was also how I did things, but this way it costs us nothing.

Her digital Cannon S2 is also a better camera then my old AE1. Better lens, sharper pics and easier to use.

I have seen both the pour down insulation and the wrap around chimney liner insulation. Which did you end up using?
