buck tooth bucket

In welding class last year I made some buck teeth out of scrap. The Idea was to slip the teeth on the bucket's teeth, grab the mesquite and pull mesquite up by it's tap root without digging a very large hole.

They install easy, just slip them on and a couple of taps with a hammer.....

Before I continue with the "demonstration" let's back up a bit and take a look at the problem.

With the regular teeth, the limber, long tap root mesquite, would simply slide through the teeth and refused to be pulled out. A large hole had to be dug to get the re-sprouting root out.

I've seen similar to that bolted on the end of an FEL bucket to pull out trees as the guys are feeding cattle. These were on 100+HP tractors.........

After getting on and off the tractor several times to put them back on I finally threw them aside and dug a deep hole.

"Buck Teeth II" will have shorter "V" teeth, that connect better.

If the fit on the sides was a little better, you could make dimples on the backhoe teeth and punch the side of the buckteeth into to them...like the way scarifier teeth are held on boxblade rippers. Knock 'em back off when done. I thought about set screws and dimples too, but not bolts sticking out that might get bent.

Also looks like a good idea for picking up larger rocks or boulders without a "thumb".

Hi, I would not scrap it, it looks great it just needs a little modifying. I would drill two holes in the bottom side right under where the teeth are, and then weld a nut right over the holes so you can put a lock bolt up through the bottom like a set screw and it should hold the teeth in place .When your done with the teeth just loosen the two bolts and take it off. I hope this will help you let us know what you decide to do .BULL

TXDon, Is the steel thick enough to simply drill and tap it for a 1/2" bolt, or weld a nut onto to use the bolt? Since it is a specialty item that you may take on and off, I don't think a bolt, or 2, on the inside of the bucket would be a problem. Just keep the bolt as short as possible.

What I would do is to weld a 2" wide strip of steel to the back of the rabbit teeth. Then drill one hole through it and the bucket.

Looks like an interesting idea, I would keep working on it as anything that can rip out a mesquite with minimal effort on your part is worth a LOT.

Don you don't need to get the whole tap root, ya just have to get that portion right below the surface that some call the nut.
It's easier to see on bigger Mesquites..most of the side roots are jutting from it.
Them BugsBunny teeth look like they will work as long as ya can keep em on the BH bucket and the set screw ideas sound good.

On them little 1 - 2" *&%$!*$@ I swear it takes a bigger hole than the 4 - 6 inchers to get them up...theres nothin to grab onto.

I love the teeth, TXDON. Have you considered changing the design a bit to use them INSTEAD of your middle 2 teeth? Your Kubota bkt has bolt-on teeth and you could leave your V-teeth on all the time. I have considered repacing my bkt teeth with something like yours, but not to remove roots. I want sharp pointed teeth to better dig into my very hard soil and to break apart sandstone. A CASE 580 operator I hired years ago had pointed teeth on his bkt which did a great job.

Okay, it took me several days to stop laughing, and as long as I don't open the attachment I won't start laughing again. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Trouble with setscrews is it takes too long to get off and back on. For a quick on-off, how about magnets? Then you might be able to take it off by rubbing it backwards on the ground and pick it up by getting the teeth close and have it "jump" on your bucket like a set of lost bunny teeth....oh crud...I'm starting to laugh again. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
