I broke my 6" vise in the channel part 10 years ago, I went to the welding supply store, bought some 1/8", 11018 stick rod, I v it all out, shined it up, looked like cast iron. Then started welding, had to pause here and there because it got hot, tried to keep it under 300 degrees, lost count of the rods but probably used 2 lbs. or so, still using the vise today but I no longer put a pipe on the handle, hand tighten only.

I bought a 5 or 6" HF vise about 15 years ago and beat on it and used it a lot and has worked out well for me.

Last summer I bought another 6" HF vise when near a store and installed it and the difference was amazing. Just the weight was half of the older one. The jaws section that clamps the material was quite a bit smaller in square inches and the throat of the face is way lighter duty. Glad I got an old one. I don't think I will pound on the new one after reading these comments.
