Thanks a lot for the info yeah its not worth it. Next vice will be a wilton

I have that same vice but it is 20 years old and the part that broke on yours s solid on mine. I also have a nice Wilton that is my go to. My dad procured it many years ago from the back of a work truck that was being scrapped.

Vintage craftsman vise's were made by Columbian, Reed or Wilton and can be a quality inexpensive alternative when looking for a vise, I have a large 5x8 Reed with the Craftsman badge on my welding bench that has been put up with a lot of work.

Those Wilton "bullet" vices are really strong and long lasting, I think they started making them in the 40's...

I have one here that my dad left me, I don't remember a time when we didn't have it here on the farm and it's been in use ever since...

Up here in Canada the most common vices available used to be Record and Woden, both made in England.

This is a pic of my Woden vice broken and repaired by brazing over 50 years ago by our on-farm mechanic. Still use it to this day.

Should put this over in the HF tools that suck thread too

I had a really cheap 4" Chinese vice I bought for my Maine camp from a cheap tool store. First time the body was struck a huge chunk broke off of the back piece. I think it was made of Bondo

And I had Craftsman branded one I returned after purchase it was so poorly machined the jaws weren't even straight.

But..I have had this 6 inch vice I bought from the old Central Tractor that used to be around here so its been while, at least 20 years (or even more?)

Yost.jpg

I did internet search and it is a YOST utility vice and best I can tell it is the 906AS. There is also a 936AS model that specs just slightly smaller and cost less. I see TSC has them both online as does Amazon (and with fairly decent reviews). I have beat on mine for years and nothing broke or bent. I remember paying around $75.00 for it at the time.

Vises | Workbench Vises | Machinists Vises | Bench Vises | Combination Bench Vises

Makes me proud to have scored that old Athol Vice for $40.00 at the Flea Mkt. :D

Not as big as the Yost 906AS only 3.5 inch jaw width and doesn't swivel but has a serious depth when open

I would really like to put a manufacture date on THAT one. I posted it in this thread. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/...hol-machine-company-5-vise-3.html#post4279398

Here is some shots of my HF vise. Notice the solid castings and not the light hollow ones

Parker is another great old brand if you can find them.
