I know the pulley will fit but I am concerned with the size of the flywheel.

/ Briggs has no spark. #42
I think your miss naming something a "flywheel".

A flywheel lives 'under' the engine cover.

Edit; Never mind, I read back about the starter.

I doubt it'll fit, but ya never know.

warburtonplayer,

update your profile depending on your area some may be able to help on where to go.

I think your making a mistake with the purchace on ebay, if you have to install a fly wheel (extra)at that price you go into a store and buy a brand new one.
example--Tractor Supply has them on the shelf

Is this a ride on lawn mower?

this is for a restoration project. I am tryin to keep it as original as possible. I know norther has engines but this is a restoration. I have all the parts I could run the engine as is but I would like to put the electric start on it. Here is a picture of it minus the engine fenders seat and hood.

plan on trying to fix the original but for now the replacement will have to do., It will be identical to the original. Once I get the new one I will completley take the old apart and go through it again piece by piece.

Now you're talking. It's amazing how a project with a deadline can be a huge frustration, but when there's no deadline it becomes a fun challenge.

I think you did the right thing getting the replacement engine to get you going. Now you can take your time and do the original right.

I've had good luck so far with engines off e-bay.

Have you removed the wiring from theengine to the ignition switch? The switch shorts the engine ignition to ground to shut it off and when you turn on the switch, it opens the circuit. Sometimes I have connected to the wrong terminal when rebuilding a tractor I am not very familiar with, or don't have a schematic.

Also, make sure the points line up well with each other. The points on th s-14/s/17/4 seem to get out of alignment easily, and don't close properly sometimes. and start with a gap of .014 or a little wider. Remove and replace one component at a time to backtrack and check out the problem

Just some ideas.

I commend you on the restoration--looks good.

I looked at the new engine on the ebay site, and if the bolt patterns are the same and the shaft size is also the same, I think you're on your way. The new engine comes with the flywheel, and has solid state ign. so one wire to go to the ign switch to kill the spark should be all that you need. The new engine will probably have a stator with two wires, but you won't nee these hooked up just to hand crank the engine. I do think, to have a "restored" tractor, you should get the correct engine running.

good luck

I would like to use the orignal engine but I nee dto have it done by the end of Dec. I have an electric delco remy starter from the original motor that I will be using on the new motor. The only thing I used to shut the old engine off was to use the spark plug switch. I will hook up the kill swithc on the new engine. Everything is done on the tractor I will post pictures as soon as I get it done.

is not a electronic ignition replacement kit available? I put one in a old troy build briggs, I hate adjusting points.

yeah the old engine will not be able to be converted to electric start.

/ Briggs has no spark. #55
Yes the Old engine can be converted to electric start using a starter/generator combo unit. If you have no spark either the coil, points, condenser or plug wire is bad, plug could be bad also. Kill wire also could be bad ( grounded) After that, nothing is left as long as magnets are still good. Even if timing was off, it would still have spark, buy another set of points and condenser and try that. Then a new plug wire. coil is last suspect.

I am confused about the timing you say if the timing is off it should still have spark. Now if there was spark and the timing was off would the engine start?

/ Briggs has no spark. #57
yes, the engine will start even if the timing was off. I just suggested that the point gap will fine tune the timing. Are you sure the starterwill fit ehe new engine? Hope you're right!

Ok I should have the motor in a few days so it should be a few more days until I can get it mounted up and everything changed over. I will give updates with eveything. As far as the old engine I am going to try a new set of points that I just got one last time before I pull the whole thing off. If fof some crazy reason it starts I guess I will have a brand new engine for another project down the road.

/ Briggs has no spark. #59
If timing is off; the engine will fire and backfire but probabaly will not start and run. Use Briggs point and condenser set; some cheap sets are junk. Take coil with you and maybe a repair shop can check the coil also.
