If you run one of these really really really low on oil, the next time you go to pull the starter rope, the motor wont turn. Like seized. Frozen.

I never liked that motor anyway plus the gas line dripped.

Just a heads up....

That is a way to get even with it :D

Are you implying that other small engines will not seize after exposed to the same condition?

Not at all....My hope is that whenever someone else does it, they will have the satisfaction of knowing they are not the only dummy who overlooked something so basic and allowed the "too busy to check, it will be ok" syndrome to take over.

We dummies sometimes need to stick together.

Don't get me wrong. I have made plenty of dumb mistakes so I am not faulting you. But I guess I would have replaced the fuel line and checked the oil. Haste makes waste. Like I used to ask my boss - "How come you never give me time to do it right, but you always give me time to do over ?"

pull her apart and check the journals. If not galled or scored, it's likely the piston / rings are what is siezing it.

In some cases I have 'fixed' a lawnmower engine by merely filling the cyl with atf and diesel and letting it set, then hammering the pistom loose with a wood dowell rod and mallet.. and then ran it like that for years. In many cases though you may need a new piston and or rings.. and make sure the liner is not scored..

Well, that's comforting to know. No oil = "bad".

I was given a lawnboy 2cycle that was run with no oil mix and died. Did the lube in the cylinder thing and it freed up and ran for years. Got rid of it because it smoked like mad and the muffler was holing out. Gave it to a kid at work that had just bought a house. He was happy to have it and ran it for years. If you want to, you could try Soundguy's advice it may bring it back to life.

I know why. And I understand what prevents such things. But it comforts me to know my moronic act and lack of attention to detail can save others from my fate.

Work with me. I am doing all I can to put a positive spin on the fact I did something so totally stupid.

Yeeaahhhh....Last summer I did that to my 79 Horse tiller. Felt pretty dumb the next few days. In a twist of fate I was done tilling for the season due to the incredibly crummy weather. I let her sit all winter, convinced I'd have to fork over for a new engine or swap the engine from my old Airiens snow thrower. Lo and behold after nagging from the old lady I pulled the start rope and she fired up. Of course I immediately shut her off, disconnected the spark plug, drained what oil was left and I filled her up with fresh oil. (In retrospect I should've probably added more oil BEFORE starting) I also replaced the fuel filter and spark plug. Now she starts first pull again and runs well.

I'm still running two 8 HP Briggs engines. One is 45 years old, the other is 40 YO. They are on walk behind tillers. But maintenance is my long suit.:)

Besides lubrication, oil also acts as a coolant. Thus..........more expensive engines have oil coolers.

Dont feel bad. I had a all gas weed eater with the swappable attachments and everything. Thing always ran good, plenty of power and torque. Last summer I crank it and go out and start buzzing the walk. Well, about ten minutes in it acts like its out of fuel. I check the gas. Plenty of gas. I pulled the cord and it starts up. Acts like its loaded up and then within a few minutes shutsdown. I give up thinking its maintenance time. The next weekend comes and experience the same thing. After three weekends, I start getting antcy....I am in the garage and find this huge puddle of oil. I star cleaning up and the youngest comes by and says "Oh Jasmine and I needed some oil for our skate boards so I unscrewed that plug and oil poured out. I did not want to make you mad so I did not tell you." I unscrewed the plug and the crankcasae was essentially bone dry. Fortunately I had treated that engine with Lucas oil treatment which penetrates metal. I think thats what saved me. The weedeater still works today, just as well as it used to.

I received a nearly new 24" Lawnboy self-propelled walk behind rear tine tiller. The ones that the handles pivot to the side so you don't walk on the fresh tilled.
The guy bought it new. Worked it breaking sod and tilling his garden till the engine ran out of oil and snapped the connecting rod.

Called it a piece of junk and gave it to me. Three hours of tear down and replacing the rod she ran like well, new.
