We just made an offer tonight on a
20 acre horse farm and they accepted our offer! We are excited!

We weren't even looking 2 weeks ago. The back story:

I'm 62 and my wife is ...err uh... a year younger. Her daughter just sold her house on an acre so she and her husband could buy enough acreage to have her 2 horses on the property instead of boarding.

Her daughter and husband came across this place but knew they could not afford it but it had a mother in law apartment. My wife was intrigued so we looked into it further. The apartment is 1600 sq ft and the rest of the house is bigger yet. It has a nice horse barn, all indoor arena and good pastures with run ins.

My wife and I have each had horses over the years, so it is not going to be strange. (This is our second marriage after raising our own kids.)

So we will let the kids have the larger living space because they are going to start a family and we will.take the mother-in-law apartment.

Well I just wanted to share our news with someone, so here it is.

Great news...congratulations:drink:

I love it when families can pool resources because they share similar interests...many benefits when you can do this. I truly hope it all works out even better than you anticipate!

You, sir, are a class act... Congrats!

Sounds like a good arrangement so long as everybody gets along. :horse:

Yes, that is the key. Obviously we think it will work, but it is yet to be proven. We want to help the kids out, but secretly I think my wife and I want to get back to our roots.

Thanks guys, we are excited about the move. If the kids get on my nerves, I'll just grab my dog and go to cabin up north for a few days of fishing and relaxation to regain my equilibrium. Yep, I have a back up plan. ;)

Smart thinking. Sounds like a good set up and hope all works out.

Always good to have a Plan B.

I think the key is mutual respect for each others space and privacy. Of course, there are many mutual benefits too, especially when keeping livestock and caring for 20 acres.

Agreed.

Agree. Having "your own space" is very important.

This reminded me of my best friend where we lived in Germany. My friend, his wife and two kids lived in a separate but attached house next to his wife's parents. The MIL was a bit of pistol. She would invite herself in just any time, never knocked on the door, and always if my friend had people over for dinner or an evening gathering. It drove him nuts. The MIL would be gossiping about so and so's last doctor visit and the like. Real conversation killer you could say among a younger generation.

But, many families there live in multi-generation arrangements and I would say she was the exception of the people I met and knew.

For what it's worth, we kinda did something similar 6 years ago - I bought the 20 acres next to my son/DIL. It has been great and other than occasionally smacking my son on the head (not easy-he's 6'8") for borrowing stuff and not bringing it back, it has been fun and good mutual support for both families. It's had the added benefit that my grand-daughter from my other child loves the place and all the critters, so I'm seeing all my kids and grandkids more often.

Cograts!! Now the work begins, but you wont have to worry about boredom:laughing:

Congratulations on your new property. We have a fairly large home with a finished basement, full living room, dining area with sink and full size refrigerator, play area, two bedrooms and bath. With kids in the military, college, looking for jobs, houses etc., we have lived in a mixed generation family several times for varying periods of time. As mentioned, clearly understood roles, guidelines, understanding etc., can make it work quite well.
