In California, if you have a regular Class C license, you are limited to a 10k rated equipment, dump or car trailer. RVs have different rules.

The local Load Trailer dealer has a whole yard full of 14k equipment and dump trailers derated to 9990 lbs for this reason. People buy them so they can be legal with a Class C license but get the benefit of the stronger undercarriage.

I am so glad I live and work where I do. Around here if it's non commercial you just get it done.

I had my 99 F350 with 9,900# GVWR and a 30' GN plated at 25,500# up and down the highway in 4 states with no issues. Same story with my 12,000 and 18,000# BP trailers behind my 04 F250 with 10,000# GVWR, 05 GMC 3500 with 9,900 GVWR, my 06 F350 with 11,500# GVWR, 08 Nissan Titan, and 2012 F150

Around hereyes if you have non commercial plates they will laugh if you pull into a weight station and simply wave you through the bypass lane.

I pulled into a scales once with my Super Duty pulling GN 20K rated trailer with two Jeep Buggies on it. The scale guy was laughing the whole time he was waving me on. I've never pulled in a scales since.

Really? So a farmer with a 1/2T pickup has a commercial plate?? And what are the restrictions involved in operating a vehicle in California with a commercial plate?

Calif also has some weird rules for RV's too - especially 5th wheels and big RV's. Even with my Colorado plates I got pulled over for not visiting a weigh station near the redwoods park up north. I thought it was for logging trucks and commercial vehicles. Officer was very rude too - said I should have known. I guess my mistake was to point out his signing was wrong and did not list RV's. I worked as an engineer at the Colorado Dept of Trans in the signing unit and knew all the Federal standards that even California used.
As I have Colorado truck plates I contested the ticket by mail. but heard nothing back, so I am probably a wanted criminal there. They also had different speed limits for RV's .That was years ago (20+) and after too many near misses I gave up on the speed restrictions and have not been back to the state. It was not RV friendly back then, Has it changed any?
