Boomer Class III PTO Question

Is the PTO on a Hydro Boomer Class III driven by gears or is it hydraulic? Just got to wondering. While using a post hole digger the auger stopped at one point, the tractor engine lugged but kept running. Real quick I pulled up but it got me to wondering if there was a clutch involved somewhere then it occured to me (I'm slow sometimes) that it might be hydraulic. Is the PTO on a gear Boomer also driven the same way? Is there any advantage or disadvantage?

The PTO on class 3 boomers is a clutch pack this should give you a better idea. By this attached picture

I'm pretty sure it is gear driven although I can't explain your experience. Did you break a shear bolt? Perhaps your clutch was slipping. I imagine there are advantages and disadvantages. Advantage: more efficient transfer of power. Disadvantage: not reversible.

An auger off the back of a tractor is an awesome display of power. When mine is digging it shakes the ground for a good 2' around the hole (especially when it hits a rock). Makes you really respect the power of the machine.

let me clarify it is gear driven on 12x12 transmissions, but a clutch pack on hydro transmission. As you can see on the previous picture I attached. I am sorry the quality is not that good. The parts program we have does not like to be copied very well.
