I have an IH 574 gas tractor which was sold with my property. I have had trouble starting it in very cold weather (below 10F). I am looking into block heaters but don't know what kind to buy. I think I am settled on a coolant heater, but don't know what size hose the 574 has.

Seems just the last few days there was some very good discussion on heaters..block, water, magnetic, dip stick, frost plug, etc.
Poke around the search, and it may turn up. Frost plug seemed the best way to go, with coolant heater about next, but the magnetic oil pan heater maybe the handiest and easiest to use with fair results.

Well, bought with it. I'm no mechanic, so I'm learning as I go. I'm leaning towards the coolant heater. I just don't know what size hose is on it, without cutting and measuring. Any advice?

What is the tractor doing when its hard to start?
Most gas stuff should start right up with a little choke at that temp if every thing is ok.
the reason diesels use block heaters is to help with the ingiton of the fuel.
the compression fires it off and if its warm it helps a lot.
I'd spend the money on a tune up and fresh fuel and see what that does first.

And I agree with Tom. Tune up would first order of business.
Heater if the temps where the tractor is setting are below neg 10 deg F.

I went to tractordata.com and it looks like your gas engine is a C200, the application guide shows part number 3100061 (page 46) for a 1 5/8 freeze plug. They also have radiator and circulation heaters as an alternative.

I have a 2544 with the C200 engine and I used to have a hard start problem at temps below zero. I switched to a one range hotter plug and haven't had an issue for 2+ yrs with them, I've started my tractor at temps down to -20 and it fired right up with no block heater. Try the tune up and you might want to consider a hotter spark plug.

If you are no mechanic get a guy to help you give it a tune up as others have stated and the hotter plug trick works also.
Now for a heater. Since you are not a mechanic the simplest one to install is a lower radiator hose heater. Get them at TSC or Napa for under $30. To measure the hose here is the shade tree mechanics way of doing it. Find the lower outlet of the radiator and slip a crescent wrench over the metal tube where the hose connects. Make sure its not over the hose then snug it up. Remove carefully and measure it with your tape measure.
