Best engine braking UTV

Yes, to keep the clutch engaged on machines like the Ranger you need to keep the RPM's up. With a load going down hill I would have to keep one foot on the gas pedal to keep the clutch engaged and the other foot on the bake pedal just in case the clutch didn't "brake" the machine enough - which was often. The HST is a far superior way to go if you intend on hauling loads down hills!

I have experienced this same problem on the Kawi Mule. We have one big hill and I hate to ride the brakes going down the hill.

I can't understand for the life of me why someone doesn't build a proper ATV. Gear transmission, nothing complicated, like maybe a Ford Pinto transmision (Like the Cushman truckster had) , although you would need a transfer case of some kind, and then nothing smaller then 15" wheels. This belt driven stuff belongs on snowmobiles! Maybe like one of those Suzukis from the eighties, just stipped down for farm use.

ya'll know this is a 3 yr old dead thread?

Regardless I can add my 2014 ranger does tranverse our 38 degree lake lot ok. Wish it had engine braking like my Honda Rubicon but it works ok

Threads never die on TBN! Old info is sometimes very valuable.

My UTV doesn't have an engine, it has a 30 horsepower three phase AC induction motor.

It has motor braking going downhill, it actually charges the batteries with the energy developed from the pull of gravity.
