Bending 1/2"x3" to 45-90 degrees

I want to make bends with a small DIY press brake with bottle jack and would like to know how many tons it would require to bend 1/2" plate. My guess is that I'd never exceed about 3" wide. Thanks.

Is the press up to the task? I have a 12 ton air over hydraulic on my homemade press and just re-designed the die. I think it matters more "how" the die and press are built as opposed to how much force it will take. I think with the proper die 1/2" by 3" could be doable with a 12 ton given the right circumstances. I have some 3/8 by 6 I want to try, just haven't had the time.

Thanks guys. Looks like a 20 ton would be more than enough for what I need to bend. I will just be making some brackets for 3 pt hitch like in the photo below.

A 20 ton press would be more than enough. I used a 4 ton bottle jack in a home made press to bend 3 inch by 1/2 inch flat bar. See post #11 in the following thread http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/build-yourself/263968-axle-surrounding-type-backhoe-subframe.html

I used a 20 ton jack to bend 9 inch by 1/2 inch plate (see post 19)

i made my log splitter into a press to bend 1/2x6 inch to make the bearing support for the disc harrow i made. its a 27 ton

Do you need 1/2" stock for a cad 1 hitch?

1/2" is what I have on most of me implements so that's what I was going by. Maybe 3/8" is plenty though.

Make a bottom die that is 8 times wider than the thickness and you wont have a problem. 8x.5=4" across the top. you could probably do it with a 3" die as you wont be bending 90* just 45* or so. On a side note hot rolled steel will bend easier than cold rolled!
