I am looking for a conversation kit to make one side of my bench grinder into a belt sander. I saw one on amazon that was pushing $300. At the price, I would jsut buy a specific belt sander.
Or, any other less expesive options please.

One side of my bench grinder is for grinding, I put a wire wheel on the other side. I later purchased a belt sander with a disc sander on it. They range in size in price depending on what you're after. Amazon carries a lot of stuff but shop around, they're not always the best deal. Home Depot ships a lot of stuff free now, too.

You're better off just buying another machine. I know that takes up real estate in the shop, but no "cheap" way to do what you want to do.

Just buy belt sander/grinder, way cheaper. Years ago, about 20, I bought a 2 inch belt sander grinder sander combo. Left side sander. I'm sure this machine is still available, for less than 300 bucks. I looked online and most have the sander on the right, but Rockler sells one with the sander on the left. Anyway, less than 200 bucks for a whole new machine. Just Google Fer Chrissakes.

Well now I am split. I do need a new bench grinder and think I will just pick one up at rural king. But I think I want to buy the parts and make a sander now. A lot of good directions and templates for them.

You can find belt sanders on marketplace for pretty cheap. I wouldn’t spend the energy trying to convert one. Even a harbor freight one is probably better than a rigged up one.

I built my own 2x72 grinder. Made it with removable tooling arm so I could swap between a flat platen or a grinding wheel. The rollers were the most expensive part as I already had the 1HP motor. Have under $150 in it.

Thats pretty slick. Any chance you could post a few more pictures of that? Thats in my capabilities to make.

I will have to look in online storage and see if I have any pics of the build I built that probably 8 years ago and lost many of my tools, including the grinder, in my divorce in 2019.

Bought a multitool belt grinder decades ago. 2x36” on 1hp Jet grinder. One of the most used tools in the shop. See conversion for similar grinders on eBay or amazon.

I looked into doing a belt conversion on my Craftsman 3/4 HP bench grinder but I use both sides. I don't need a wide belt, just something to burnish and take the burrs off small parts. I shopped around for a separate unit and was turned off at the prices.

Last year, I found this one on sale at Amazon for $75:

It was well reviewed but I was skeptical about the size and HP. I've been using it for a year now and it has exceeded my expectations. It doesn't take up much bench space and it stows easily when not needed. It's also heavy enough where it doesn't move around on the bench when in use.

Not much help for those who want a wider belt though.

I don’t even see a use for my wheel grinder any more since getting a belt sander. Wish I did it many years ago.

I picked this little unit up a couple weeks ago. They had quite a bit of issues with the previous 3/4HP model motors but so far the guys are saying this new 1HP version is pretty solid. Time will tell. I really like the adjustable speed of this one.
