I need a new belt for my PT 422 48" mower deck (T3035).

I looked at the Power-Trac site but did not see where to order.

But also, if I could I was wondering if there is a place close to me that I could get the same belt size?

Does anyone know or has anyone done this for the mower belt?

I got mine at Tractor Supply Co. just be sure you have the correct width..take the belt with you and match it up.

Thanks Farmall140,

Just another good reason to go through TSC ;~)

But, do you think the belt is stretched out by use, and should I take that into consideration in selecting a slightly smaller belt size?

It's been awhile but I think the size I got from TSC was the closest I could find without going over the size of the used belt. The deck does have an adjustment for tension. My original belt became "chewed up" partly due to debris under the deck covers...I have since removed the covers hoping this will prolong the life of the belt. Now the leaf blower removes all debris quickly and this also allows you to keep an eye on the tension over time.

I purchased a backup belt at NAPA. The number is A105. My original belt is still holding so I have not installed the spare.

Thanks guys.

I will check both places out, since they are fairly close to drive to.

Look for a 1/2" X 105 " belt. Here is what my belt looked like after 2 1/2 mowing seasons.

Would it help to extend belt life if you engage the PTO with the engine going slow (maybe idle or just above). This reduces that startup shock which can take those notches out of the belt. I do this for the bush hog if I remember, to reduce the clunk. No belt there of course.

Bob,
that's a good point. I always forget that the PTO engagement on the 422 and 425 are different than the 180. The 180 has a manual lever on the side of the tunnel so any PTO driven attachment can be engaged slowly almost like a soft start electric motor. It works very well without having to throttle the engine way down first.

I wonder what the mechanism for the 180 PTO clutch is. Does it have wear during engagement. Perhaps it's like an automotive clutch. Is so you might protect it by slowing the engine down during engagement. Remembering would be the hard thing.

Bob, I believe that the 180 uses a valve similar to the one below. This is what my 1445 used to control the speed of the hydraulic motor. You can engage it at full engine speed. In the off mode, it is just bypassing fluid back to tank.

Well, what can I say...another problem.

I was doing the grass, and because of getting the 422 back awhile ago from service (they didn't hook up the hot wire for the fan), and noticed the fan was not working, I now have a tendency to look at the fan every now and then to see if it is turning.

It was not turning!

I checked the connections at the thermal relay, tested for power and ground. Checked the fuse. All ok.

Went back to the fan, cut the two wires going into the fan assembly, they have power.

So...I guess the fan is shot!

Has anyone replaced one of these?
Where did you get it?
Do you have to go through Power-Trac?
Is there a local place I could get one?
How much did you pay?

Thanks,
Abe.

When mine failed on my 425 at 210 hrs I went to autozone and purchased a universal 12" replacement unit. It has worked fine I now have 400 hrs. the fan still works but I am in the process of replacing the roll over assembly and I have a wheel motor leaking for the second time. Always something.. Maybe we should start a thread to list problems with everyones machine with the hours to failure. If something comes up as a common failure at least you could monitor your machine.

Clarke,
Do you have a pic of the one you bought from autozone?
Also, did everything fit correctly?

Idabe,

Found this part # for the fan could not find Mfg. (P/N 733680). The fan does not fit out of the box. I had to elongate the four plastic mounting feet with a twist drill, very minor adjustment. Fits perfectly when modified. It also has a reversible blade and motor if you would like to run it backwards. A word of caution when drilling the plastic feet. Put the plastic foot in a vise or hold with a vise grip or you will break the plastic foot.

Clarke,
I bought the fan (P/N 733680) from Autozone today, and it is almost a perfect fit, just like you said.

I turned the key on and touched the PT fan wires to the new fan connection to see which way the blade was going to turn......
..........and nothing happened! (argh!)

Did I get a "bad" new fan?

Nope, I took it over to my car, hooked up the jumper cables, and touched the new fan wires to the cables...and it turned right on! (Though from the factory the new fan blows down onto the oil cooler instead of drawing air out like the original fan, but I think that can be rectified.)

So now I am thinking, maybe the old fan wasn't bad. I take it over to the jumper cables and IT STARTS TURNING RIGHT AWAY!
