I have a shredder that needs to have a bearing replaced. Said bearing is secured with a set screw. Said screw is secured using a slotted head, where the problem exists. For whatever reason, the slot is barely more than a scratch on the head of the screw.

One approach would be to drill the screw for a reverse-thread drill, but I expect that the screw is probably very hard, and the screw is not accessible.

Other approaches? Thanks.

Are you sure it's a set screw?
Any possibility that it is an with eccentric lock,
Bearings with eccentric lock have a collar that you twist in one direction to grip and the other to release. Compared to bearings with a set screw, they’re easier to install, require less adjustment over time, and are better for high-speed applications. But, they only work on shafts that spin in one direction.

If the screw sticks up some you can improve the slot. I've used a tiny cutoff wheel in a dremel tool to slot rounded off screw heads but a hacksaw blade would work too.

Hmmm ... new to me, but sounds really cool!

Well, there's a hole (5mm?) with a slot-like impression at the bottom. I'm hoping that the arrival of the replacement will provide insight.

It's buried 10mm or so in the colar. Alas.

Any chances of sharing a picture with us?

I just had to drill out a broken screw in a shop size nibbler. Luckily was able to get it apart enough to put the piece onto a Bridgeport milling machine. That made it easy to center drill and then bore the broken shank with a small carbide bit. Then an easy-out. But without the stability of the mill, I don't think it would have been successful. As was, it became easy. Always curious about tricky repairs & hoping for pictures...

If it does have the eccentric locking collar, they will have a drilled hole to use a punch in to lock/unlock the collar.

I wasted a whole lot of time years ago trying to get a set screw out of the bottom of a hole in the collar of a bearing. I just could not find the right wrench or driver to fit. Finally gave up and brought it to a friend with a machine shop and asked him to drill it out.

He put a punch in the "set screw" hole gave a couple of taps and twisted off the eccentric lock collar. Man did I feel stupid. Prior to that, I never knew such a thing existed.

Thanks to all for the reply. I finally used a rotary tool -- one of those hand held gizmos -- this one being battery powered, with a cutting wheel to slice the race, allowing the thing to be pulled of with a bearing puller. What surprised me was what a quick job the little tool made of my problem.
