I don’t think so. The bearing is what centers the shaft. Once you get the new one on and the shaft back in place, I think you will be fine.

For what it's worth. As a retired machinist a lot of the high speed slab mills that we used on horizontal boring mills were left hand helix right hand cut. That is somewhat like the pinion gear looks like as compared to a slab mill. The left hand helix with the right hand cut forced the spindle and or quill back into the head stock on a horizontal boring mill. This was a favored cutter design to eliminate chatter and help size control when having extended reach cuts. I think that this how the statement "But tap on the end of the shaft driving it into the housing" was developed using the left hand helix / right hand cut synopsis. Of course this would only work if the assembly is not damaged as shown. Again for what it's worth.

When you get the new bearing and install the shaft should rotate back in place as you tighten the seal collar. I would use the seal collar to seat the bearing without seal installed then remove collar and install the seal. Just take your time and think about it as you go. You will know when things are lining up.

That is unfortunate. The one gouge looks fairly deep and is right where the seal rides. I would mic that and outer diameter of the seal. You might could find a seal that would fit well if you had a machine shop turn the end of the shaft down to get rid of the gouges. The part of the shaft where the bearing fits is likely fine. Testing the fit would tell.

You could also have a machinist deposit metal on the surface and machine it back down to spec.
This reminded me of the Speedy Sleeve. One of these might would work well in this case.

I was not able to get the parts book to load all of the diagrams but you should verify it comes with the inner bearing. I would be surprised if it did.

I suggest you contact the folks at SKF and talk to them about the shaft and if they think a speedy sleeve would work. That is something you could just add to your shaft yourself. As long as the seal has a smooth surface to mate to you should be ok.

Here is a video explaining how it works.

I have removed bearings off of shafts that looked as crummy as that. Also repaired journals as messed up as that. Any good machine shop could fix that for a lot less than the $650 plus bearings you were talking about. I would guess a few hours to fix. As others mentioned you can either turn down the chewed up shaft and spray on new metal which then gets turned or tig in new metal and turn. 15 minutes to get the old bearing off. Note I am not a machinist or welder and I fixed up a rusted and chewed up gear box. It is skilled work but a routine job for a talented machinist. Adam Booth has more than a few videos of fixing shafts.
