Agreed.

I'm not too terribly far removed from govt education. 15-20 years ago I was in highschool.

3 years of a foreign language that I haven't used. (Rural Ohio lol)
How about we focus on getting out language right.
Senior year English was nothing but Greek and Norse mythology. Why should that be forced on anyone? If someone wants to get further education on that....more power to them. But it didn't mean squat to me.

And about 2 years into highschool, they did away with shop class and home ec.

And we wonder why this generation isn't independent. Let's stop teaching stuff that matters in the real world in favor of the BS that's being forced now

I do believe you and I are on the same page.. Soon we will be advocating on how to use a grease gun.:) You might be surprised the number of people that don't know how.

My wife is a teacher and would totally agree with you. Unfortunately the no child left behind act by President Bush put requirements on what is taught. Granted, each state had to come up with their own requirements to meet this Act. My wife has to teach the subject matter that will be state tested in the Spring each year. Low scores on this test can result in her being relieved of her job, at least in our state. There are also no handicaps/multiplying factors for the children who unfortunately have low IQ's and do poorly on these tests. The Act was "No" child left behind.

Learning the basics and hopefully more for whatever toys you have, hobbies, or interests is good to have. There are books on just about any subject and the internet has made it even easier.

Yeah, all the good intentioned governmental legislation in the world, always has unintended consequences.

Knowing how to check voltage and continuity is something everyone should be taught IMO

You can't count on schools for this, sadly.

I come from a long line of EEs, so I was taught by my dad, but he also introduced me to kits you
soldered together yourself. One of my first was a small analog volt-ohm meter. I still have it somewhere.
Last week I gave away an old analog Heathkit VTVM that was excellent, but no longer used.

Not to get to far from the OP's subject, but I volunteer in a local middle school now, showing kids how to
use tools. I discovered that none knew how to hammer a nail in properly.

Parents: please teach your daughters and sons how to use a multimeter, and hammer, too.

About 10 years ago I dated a girl that was finishing up her biomedical engineering program at a prominent college in Texas. For their senior project they were building a cart that could be used in 3rd world countries behind a motorcycle as a way to transport people to the hospital. While constructing the cart, one of her male classmates had to google how to use a nut, washer and wrench. He wasn't alone. Blew my mind they were so disconnected with reality. It didn't work out with her.....

My FIL was a professor, linguist and writer.
As an immigrant he wrote a Lithuanian-English dictionary and later on a series of history books.
His only tool(s) was a small brass hammer that had multiple screwdrivers in the handle, and at that he did not know how to use them.
I consider myself to be an above average handyman and so was a welcomed addition to the family.
LOL and always kept busy.

He did everything 'by the book' and actually was very successful in real estate and banking and was later on named to the order of Luthuania for his many achievements and historical writings.
While 'all thumbs' he was otherwise very smart.

Wow, sure learned a lot on using a multimeter from all the input from you members. Probably the reason why I never used mine was the confusion between volts, amps, witch selection to use etc. I watched the videos and looked kind of easy. Now I will go over to my tractor and see if I learned anything lol. After charging the battery 3 days ago my tractor starts easily so I guess the battery might be ok.
Thanks for your help

Bump this thread to date.
Since I charged up the battery and starting the tractor every other day it seems okay now. So maybe the battery is still good I mean she is only 3 years old. Will see what happens when the cold weather arrives and if she acts up then she gets replaced.

It may make it another season or two, My battery in the Kioti is a 2010 by the date code on the battery. Still starts it fine, but it is not the battery it once was. I have installed a digital voltmeter on my tractor (see it here), and I can tell during the startups, although you would never even notice it, the voltage is just a bit low and getting lower by the month during the glow cycle. This may be its last season.

Please know this, any time you run a starting battery down, you have "used up" some of its life. Starting batteries are not made to run down like trolling motor or other stationary batteries are.

Hi all, I have a 2014 CK 30 HST ( 58 hrs) and it is more parked then used lol. I mostly use it in the winter for blowing snow other than that it sits idle. The other day I started it and moved near the garage no problems. Today went out to move it again and guess what battery could not turn engine over just made clicking noises. So I figured it is dead and checked to see maybe I left some lights on or something and no everything is off.
Now I am wondering if I should put the charger on the battery or just say the heck with it and by an new one. I want to make sure my tractor starts in the winter so I can't take a chance with a bad battery.
Thanks for your help and if I do change the battery what kind would you suggest that does not drain over time.
Thanks
Gilles

Make sure you have a desulfating charger, if you are going to try and rescue the battery...:)
