“They”, meaning taxpayers? Or are you saying the cops themselves?
Yeah, just as the municipality pays for the police cars, they'd pay for the chargers. That's a fact. However, if by some means, the municipality could purchase EV cop cars, chargers, etc... and save the public money on reduced maintenance and reduced fuel usage, then it's a win. If it costs more, it's not. Put it to the bean counters and see if it pays.

They'd also have to figure out how to meter the chargers at the homes to pay for the electricity.

I really have zero concern I'll be forced to do anything against my will.

What that is going to happen EV wise in the United States is not even know today it's just all talk. I am getting too old to fret about things that may never happen.
I've been forced to run ethanol against my will for years thanks to the farmers lobbying congress. Just sayin...

Really interesting to see who bites on charging stations. With every gas station owner in the USA having a bullseye on their back, I wonder which ones will spend millions to install charging stations with air conditioned/heated lounges for EV owners to mill around in while their vehicles charge? Which repair garages will be able to convince middle age techs they have to go back to tech school and learn new auto repairs all over again.
The “great reset” will be retiring and putting a lot of people out of business.

Hybrids have their place as we transition to pure EVS but you can see why they are a hack at best.
Our current paid for 2017 SUV is low mileage since we even in busy years pre Covid barely topped 4,000 miles a year, it would be hard to justify replacing this year. But that 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid caught our attention. With the options I like priced around $30k and I like the Flexbed setup where you can use 2x4’s in slots to retain cargo & the tailgate that acts as a bed extender to allow 4x8’ sheets of plywood etc to ride. It is a step down from our current 7.5 towing capability, 2K, 4K w/ the optional 250-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder and eight-speed automatic transmission. Reputed 40 MPG city, cool DIY configurable AC wiring harness in the tail where you can plug in an RV fridge and a couple of AC plugs. Ticks off a lot of things for us I said while sweeping pea gravel out of the back of the SUV.

In western Kentucky we have some chains where you decide at the pumps.

Police, fire, ambulance, maintenance, government, post office just for starters will run their batteries down in both day and night shifts, but I guess thats hard to grasp?
You know 95% of Post Office mail carrier trucks drive less than 40 miles/day on their routes? Or think about how regenerative braking would benefit the repetitive start/stop duty cycle?

I saw an article about a company developing wind-up spring technology for garbage trucks. The idea is to let the spring stop the truck then assist getting it moving again.

Think a little deeper about what goes on at night while you are sleeping. Cops are patrolling, ambulances go to accidents and high speed idle for hours. Packages are delivered. Inspections are performed. Bakeries deliver donuts!
Research "dog mode" and "camp mode" for Tesla to get an idea of how little is consumed running the HVAC. Police cars and ambulances spend 7 of 8 hours/shift idling. If one really feels one must keep the battery topped off then at idle a little 120VAC 12A connection will more than power the HVAC and vehicle.

Far fewer police are on the street at night than during the day. Patrol is a low-speed low-energy consumption mode compared to interstate speeds. As covered above, an EV is much more efficient at idle than an ICE so things are equally better at low neighborhood patrol speeds.

Around here officers are assigned a vehicle which they drive home after the shift. That could be a problem if they are expected to charge at home. Officers take better car of a vehicle they drive home than a pooled vehicle.

Anyone who thinks all EVs will be charged at night is really showing ignorance.
Anyone who thinks one EV is charged during the day totally negates the fact 97% get their charge exclusively at night is delusional.

With T.O.U. billing (used in locales at risk of daytime brownouts) it may cost 5x more to charge during peak hours than at night. If that is what you have to do then that is what you have to do. But that is something most will make great effort to avoid.

Yup, I've often charged during the day. Arrest me.

Speaking of charging for fire, police, ambulance, government and the like, how many 100’s of millions will the mandated changeover cost? How much will the charging stations cost? Where will all the ICE cars go? Who will pay for all of it? How many municipalities are broke and can’t afford it? Or people for that matter?
I bet the taxpayer foots the bill and the bill is 10 times the speculated cost.
You forget the purpose of modern government seems to be to recklessly spend money to profit political donors, sponsors, and special interest groups. You are fighting against the symptom not the cause. The cause is ever-expanding government which needs to be stopped.

Nationwide Congress has given the EPA authority to impose mandatory ethanol consumption quotas. Currently to be allowed to sell 9 gallons of gasoline one must have a credits proving the sale of 1 gallon of ethanol as a motor fuel. There has been a big push to increase the quota to 3 gallons ethanol per 17 gallons gasoline.

Locally E10 87 AKI is going for about $2.80/gallon. E0 is $3.80.

Someone somewhere must sell E85 to get credits to be allowed to sell E0.

That is not a hack nor all that unusual. If you understand the Power Split Device transmission pioneered by the Toyota Prius you would appreciate the simplicity.

Briefly it is nothing but a 3-input/output planetary gear set with ICE, Motor/generator A, and Motor/generator B. One motor is directly connected to the drive wheels. The other "floats" and is controlled to regulate the contribution of the ICE.

Planetary gear sets were pioneered making modern automatic transmissions, which you don't seem to think is a "hack". In general there is a planetary gear set for every gear ratio in your automatic transmission. But in a PSD transmission there is only one.

Sorry, I was responding to the 160 hours a month at 80 amps. That's enough to run the pickup 6000 miles a month.
Wow, That's going to bump your electric bill up if you charge it 160 hours a month! Wait until the electric rates start going up. They are a monopoly, you know.
