OK, how many times do you hit the BACK click?

When I get on TBN I scan the recent post. After visiting/reading/responding to the subject I hit back, back, back etc to get to the list of recent post I started from. What am I missing here, where's the secret button to take me back on one click or two to where I started.

You know some of these post get long and if you read 20 responses thats 20 back, back, back back....lmao...you get my point!

I know I can just go main index, recent post over again but that refreshes and I lose my place. I want it really easy! Come on Mike give me the scoop!

Are you using the "Threaded" display mode rather than "Flat"? I prefer the flat, and this is what I do, and I never have to hit "back, back, back".

Go to "My Home". At the bottom of the page Edit "Display Preferences". For "Default Display Mode" chose "Flat". For the option "Total posts to show on one page when viewing a post in flat mode (default is 10)" - make sure this number is at least 10 - I like 25 since I get less page breaks.

When I open a new thread that has new posts, I am automatically taken to the new posts, and I can scroll down to each new post. Don't use the "Next" button to get to the next post, scroll down instead. Sometimes I hit a page break, and have to select the next page of posts.

I think this will answer your question.

I do use threaded due to my obsession with condensing the page. I will try flat for awhile and see if I can get use to it. Now I'll have a HOT scroll wheel!

Thanks a bunch!

BTW.....After posting this response, I had to click back 4 times to get back to my recent post menu!

Just use the 12 or 24 hour version and you don't ever have to hit the back button more than one.

If you don't want to go "back, back, back, back", just use the drop down arrow to the right of the Back button, and you can go back as many as nine pages with two clicks. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

One of my link buttons on my browser is set to TBN which I have set for posts within the past 12 hours. I never use the BACK button.

Greg,

When I want to do a post, I right-click on the "Reply" and use the "Open in new window". When I'm done submitting my reply, I just close the window. The original window is then right where I left it.

Hey guys thanks a bunch, I thought I knew these computers....well maybe it's software. I've now tried all of your suggestions and I see use for all of your ideas.......... I'm a winner. TBN ain't just for tractors!

Hmm. When I reply to a post, I first preview it, then click "Post this message". The system tells me it's posting the message, then automatically returns me to the page where the message was posted. It goes to the top of the page, so I have to scroll down to the bottom to see my message and make sure it looks the way I want. Then, I click on "Index" and it takes me back to the index of the section, then click on "Index" once again and it takes me to the main index. I never click on the Back button.

Greg,

One other tip.
I'm not real big on using the mouse as I prefer to keep my hands on the keyboard as much as possible. Alt+left arrow is the same as "back".

Another tip.... if you hold down on the shift key before you click on a link, that link will be opened in a new window. I use this method when I'm at home on my countryfied 56K modem. This way, I never have to use the back key and wait for pages that I've already loaded to reload. When I'm at the main forum page, I'll "shift & click" a particular forum...this brings that forum to a new window. Then I'll "shift and click" a particular thread that interests me...again a new window opens. When I'm done browsing, I just close the window that I no longer need. This method really speeds things up if you're dealing with a 56K hookup like I am at home.

I do the same thing by right clicking on a link and choosing to open in a new window. Firefox is nice because you can open a new window or open a new tab.

Ok, so it's not just me. I had the problem at home all weekend on this site, and it is doing the same thing at work on a different computer...

Of course I'm just using Windows Internet Explorer 7, but I've not had that problem.
