Has anyone else experienced a dry dipstick when initially pulling the trans./hydraulic dipstick out on a B3030? The service manager at the dealer said he's heard about this happening before but couldn't offer an explanation as to how the stick is dry when initially pulled out. When the stick is re-inserted, I always get the true reading. Naturally I never go by the level on a dipstick when it's pulled out, I always wipe the stick and put it back in but it really threw me the first couple of times this happened. So far, no one has been able to explain how this can possibly happen.

It's more an internal combustion engine quirk then a B3030 :D
Back in the day when I started taking interest in the internal combustion engine and all things related, including the maintaining of it, one of the very 1st lessons I was taught by those that already had "the knowledge" was to always wipe down the dip stick when one 1st pulls it out and reinsert it again to get a proper reading.
I was told that 1st check will either read to high or too low.
Theres a logical explaination for it I'm sure, some law of thermodynamics, but I adhere to the recheckem therum myself :D

I think (can't claim to really know) that the dipstick tube is sealed by the dipstick and air in the tube keeps the oil pushed down. When you pull the dipstick out, that lets the oil come up so when you re-insert it, you get the right reading. I've had the same thing happen on engines other than tractors.

Bird's got it right. My B3030 does the same thing.

Thanks to all for the feedback, at least now I know there wasn't any strange curse put on my 3030. Bird, your theory sounds really logical, I just wouldn't have imagined that the seal between the stick and the tube would be that air tight but that seems to be the only explanation.

That's the way it is on my B7800. When I first remove the dipstick it's dry and when I reinsert it I get a level.

My B5100 does exactly the same thing everytime it's sat for a few days.
