For the past 2 years I have been reading the posts on the PowerTrac thread. Enlightenment is hardly the correct word as my passion for a PT has gone from interest to must have. Finally, I am getting close to making the purchase of my new 425.
For some months now, I have been thinking over my attachment needs. In all but a few cases the attachments that I will purchase can be used for years to come. Those few items that are needed at the beginning of the project and will not be needed after can be sold.
This brings up the reason for this thread.
Attachments purchased can only be used on PT machines. The power of resale seems to me to be here at TBN. On the other hand if we tried some kind of exchange program for the attachments such as box blade that are needed usually on one project then just sit. In my case, I have need of a box blade for about two months and then it would just sit. I’m sure there are other attachments that will sit after the first year that could also be exchanged or sold.
I don’t know if this would be practical or not but might be worth exploring.
Just trying to cut down on overall costs.

Paul:
Your idea may be a good one, but has a couple of predictable problems. If people are close together, great, but ultimately shipping gets to be expensive.
A tougher problem might be the penchant of each of us to figure out new things to do with the attachments, not to mention the undeniable pleasure of having something there when you want it, even it it's seldom. But, if there are several 400 series people within a reasonable distance, certainly things like the box blade, or trencher or mini hoe or stump grinder would be great to share.
Glad to hear you're getting close. They made the PT425 into just what you've been waiting for, didn't they?
Good luck.

I agree the core idea has merit, but shipping, in some cases, might be a high hurdle, i.e getting a box blade back and forth between NC and Montana. Then again, it might offer a good excuse to warrant a trip west to go fly fishing. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This is a very tight knit group and as it grows there will be PT owners in all 50 states. That will help with the resale, trade, and exchange of attachments.
As my wife said after I told her of my post "you always wish you had never gotten rid of that." /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I'd figure in the cost of the attachments as part of the cost of the project. Then, if you get to keep them for the rest of your life it is a bonus! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

a very wise statement for sure!

MR, I totally agree with what you just said! In fact, that's why I bought the old PT1418 in the first place. I was building the masonary patio at my house, and I knew I couldn't possibly do all the digging, moving, and loading by hand (not even with a few friends helping me). And I simply wasn't willing to pay someone the cost of labor + materials (which would have cost more than the tractor + materials) to do it for me. Machinery was needed... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif And not just any machinery, something small and easy on the turf (unlike the Bobcat my brother-in-law brought in to dig up some stumps for me...I think he did more damage than good).

Anyway, I looked at the price of renting a Toro Dingo plus attachments for 6 weekends @ $200+/day, then stumbled across the PT for sale locally. It was a no brainer. If I ignore the $1500-1600 or so of "refurbishment cost" (it wasn't in great shape when I got it), then it has paid for itself from the patio project and a plumbing repair (dug a 30 foot trench for the plumber using the 8" bucket!). Assuming I keep it long enough, I'm sure it'll have paid for itself even considering refurb and maintenance cost.

People often tease me about buying a piece of equipment instead of renting. In my mind, it would have been ridiculous NOT to buy...in addition to the financial perspective, I've still got it and can use it for other things, plus when I was building the patio, it was there and I could do some work with it after my day job a couple of nights per week (couldn't have done that with a weekend rental). Plus, I didn't waste hours of time trekking back and forth to the rental place across town.

Now, I'm just trying to figure out how I could rationalize...er...uh...I mean....justify a new 422/425... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
