This concerns a PTO drive shaft that has come apart. The shaft itself, not its PTO connection. The shaft connection is splined. The tractor side has a section where there are no splines - width of two or three splines. I would expect to find a matching section on the implement side, but no dice. The tractor side can be fitted to the implement side, but only slips in a half inch or so.

So, what am I missing? (FWIW, the implement is a Rears 750 mower)

I always hated those fine splined ones, my Uncle had a tiller with a shaft like that, we found it easier to lay a straight edge on the shaft side yokes to be sure it was phased, then it can only go in one of two places 180 degrees apart

Look real close at the male shaft , 1/2 " in where it stops there will be a tiny dot of weld between two of the splines. That has to line up with where the splines are missing on the female side. B

Had one PTO shaft that had 2 splines that were "pinched" together in one spot. Those slipped into the female part where the gap was.

Ditto 2 splines pinched together on male end is the way my splined shaft is. They can be a pain to get lined up.
