I had all the timber that was worth anything cut from a area. A guy in this area has a Gyrotrac that can come the remaining small trees, stumps and tops up. How much of a area should I expect him to cover per hour?

Would it be more cost effective to have a dozer pile the tops and burn rather than mulching?

What is the general rate on one of these? I thought he was pretty high.

I hired bulldozer (CAT D7) to remove scattered trees from about 31 acres. Many small and quite few large trees. The guy removed the trees, stumps, roots and pushed them on several piles. He also fixed several eroded places. Later on, after some rain, I had to pull only few roots that were sticking from ground. It took him about 9 hours including cleaning the dozer before he left. Paid little over 1000 USD. I didn't burn the piles but left them on perimeter as animal hiding places.

What size GT is it? That will make a big difference. The GT is the best route, just picture everything cleaned up and where it sits. A dozer will turn the ground everywhere as he piles, everywhere. Price wise the GT will probably be higher than a dozer upfront but when he is done it is done with the best finished product!! Price is between you too, these machines are not cheap but the GT will handle whatever is out there, hopefully it is a GT-18 or 25.

GT25 for $350.00 an hour. Just wondered what could be done in a hour.

Thats in the range for that machine. Without seeing what the tract looks like, it it's hard to say what he can do in a hour. We typically try to give a per acre price. Some jobs 5 acres a day, some jobs half an acre per day.

The GT will give you the best look possible. Small chip size vs a carbide hammer head. When requested, we go over things twice and leave a mulch that looks like it came out of a bag. It will also handle any size material where a carbide head has limitations. Hourly rate will be higher, but production rates typically out weigh the price with a good operator.

Dozer will be cheaper to just push everything in a pile and rape your land again. Some contractors will tell you that you can burn these piles yourself after they leave, but without heavy equipment to keep them pushed up while burning it won't happen.

If you want to burn the piles ask the bulldozer guy to run over the pile few times to crush it and make it more dense so it could sustain fire.
