I was really frustrated changing from Android to iPhone, but like it now, except for how I have to pull pictures off to my computer. I won’t use their cloud stuff that they try to force you to pay extra for.

Don't have to use the cloud. If you have another apple product... such as a laptop, desktop, or iPad the pictures automatically are populated on your other sync'd devices. I am guessing your PC is not a Mac?

My understanding is they are synced via iCloud

That is one way but they will also sync over your home wifi. iCloud is not needed. You can also Airdrop it from one to the other.

I use Image Capture on my Mac. Makes it easy.

Yes, as far as I know.

Air drop only works with the later Macs. Mine is late 2009 and it wont work.
