Anyone use ice studs?

If you worry about studs or chains scarring up your garage floors get a couple of 2x 12's to lay on the floor where you park and drive.

Thanks, that sounds great. I could leave them in since I won't be on asphalt or concrete(except for the garage). Any rust problems?

They say to put down ply wood on the concrete floor under the tires if you park inside the garage.

Yes, I think plywood would be less of a trip hazard than 2x12s. Getting petty clutzy in my old age.

I use grip studs in my tractor for winter. they work very well. I have chains but since I went to a cab tractor I help out my neighbors some and the chains will drive you nuts if you run down the road at all. the studs are smooth when plowing and grip very well. I have a sloped driveway thats partially in the shade and the studs are great. I looked at several different kinds of studs and went with the grip studs since they wont break off in your tire.. they are used on things like skidsteers all the way to trucks. there are alot of different sizes on the website with charts depending on your tread depth. overall i'm very happy with the grip when plowing. I have a 7.5' power angle skid steer mount plow that I used last winter with the grip studs on a boomer 3040. it kept the front end from sliding when pushing snow with blade angled and I had no problems on glare ice with them. I will be installing the grip studs this week in the new LS XR4145 .

Based on your tip, I ordered these Grip Studs, a lot of 150+tool=$204.00 .After a hour of finding away of translating the metric system to inches I went with this size 1910T, a good 3/16" stick out, was gonna go with 1912 with 1/4" stick out but they were around $50.00 more, both penetrate tire just a hare under 3/4">>>( Grip Studs Screw-In Tire Studs | Traction in Ice, Snow and Dirt | 1910T Tire Stud )Should get them next week sometime, then install them in one year old 16" front Crop Max tire.

Just incase there's a rare chance of some here besides me that's not that good with the MMMMMMMMM system, I found this neat MM to inches ruler online>>>>> Convert mm, cm to fraction or decimal inches (in=mm=cm)

Good info. Please let us know how installation goes and how much difference the studs make.

We do set tractors up with them and they work fine for snow removal! They work especially well because the chains often lift the tire from the surface lowering the tires ability to grab traction. Chains work best in deep snow or in unplowed conditions. We typically use non-carbide do to the cost.

Do you have a link for the non-carbide studs? How do they wear? I figured being carbide would increase longevity.

I wont be able to tell how they work until it snows again or when I start getting out firewood. The last snow storm all the front tire were doing was holden up the front end, so I'm assuming there will be a little more traction hopefully enough so I can steer the tractor without brakes, we'll see.

Thanks. This has been helpful. I have a front end snow blower on my Kubota L3560 and use that with a rear blade to clear a 1/4 mile driveway that is 3/4 hard pack and 1/4 Asphalt (when you get near the house). Even with good and tight chains on the back tires (farm treads), I get ice slide when heavy loads want to pull tractor to that sloped side. I read that front end chains, used in combination with rear chains (dealer also does not recommend) can cause axle damage and was looking to get an alternative in place. These studs in front farm tires sound like it. I will need to remove when it warms up to avoid asphalt damage. The rear chains are a real pain to put on and if these work on the front, I may switch over next season. Thanks for any input and again for the web site reference for the studs.

I put screws in the Gravely's R1 tires. Didn't really get a chance to try them out.

Some on here reported they've put screws in racing motorcycle tires.
