I've heard of it. And I've contemplated it. Then I just rented one and moved on. If you do it, take pics and let us know about the build.

Long ago in my area, most of the farmers who had one had a homebuilt. Most of the factory ones were owned by contractors.

Most I saw were Ford Model T and A rear ends.

For example:

If I were going to build one now, with junkyard parts, I would start with a differential from an independent suspension car. No axle shaft and housing shortening to do.

Ah, the good old days. Can you imagine Lincoln or Miller printing project drawings for something like that now? Lawsuits cometh, and that right soon.;)

The ones from Surplus seem to be a good choice to go with.

I build one from an old BMW differential, put about $75 on the table for it. Frame was made from leftover materials laying around, drill is not exactly really good ($45 for a hand augur, garden use) but was good enough for testing it here on some sandy soil. Still have to make a good drill.

In this post some pics.

Good luck.

Don't forget to add a shear bolt or slip clutch!
A truck rear axle can probably handle a lot more torque that the PTO gears in your tractor's tranny can.
Good luck and show us some pictures if this thing comes together.

Ill post pictures when I get the motivation to yank the rear end outta the old ford. I'm gonna call around and see if I can find something smaller then the 250 rear I got right now. Seems like it be to heavy to hook and unhook.
