Any experience with radiant heat?

Dr. Dan: Let me put in my 2 cents. I am aware of a class action lawsuit having to do with the radiant tubing put into slab foundations. Seems that after a few years, some of this tubing manufactured by one of the major rubber companies I just don't remember which one, began to leak. In order to repair or replace, the slab had to be jack hammered at enormous expense. An aquaintance of ours has had to have their slab jack hammered 3 times because of leaks. Their home owners insurance carrier threatened to cancel them over claims.

The facility was a single story firefighting bunkhouse, about 3300 SF. The whole system, including installation, was around $20,000.00 This did include insulating ductwork as it was run in the attic space. This and other related costs would save about 1-2K if installed in a house with a basement, or crawl space.

Yes, an antifreeze mixture was used in the system as the heat transfer medium, in closed loop system. The manufacturer of the equipment was Hydron Module,

The loop piping in the trenches was High Density Poly Ethylene(HDPE). Yes, the installers had done this sort of install before. The only problems were not related to the ground source system, just typical construction glitches. The electricity bill for this site runs about $1100.00/year compared to a similar construction, similar age, size, purpose facility in a nearby area where it runs $5000.00 to $8000.00 /yr.

Based on this savings, our payback is in sight.

Sorry again about the delay in responding, it's approaching the end of our fiscal year at work and it's a nuthouse trying to get everything rapped up. Hope this helps.
