Another dang skunk !!!!

Went out to feed the chickens this morning and the neighbor lady yelled that there was a skunk by the lawnmower building. By the time I walked around to look it had torn some of the fiberglass loose and got underneath the floor. I could smell it inside the building and all around. It was not there yesterday.

This will be the fifth or sixth one i have trapped since the one sprayed under our house about five years ago. We were out of the house for two weeks over that one. That is the only wild critter I have no mercy on. When the one sprayed under the house i had to go back in to get my keys to drive to a motel. Holding my breath with my nose pinched and my mouth clamped shut I could still TASTE the odor. Never had that happen with anything else. My wife gets nauseated when she smells one.

Had a buddy with a skunk problem, they would go under his house and spray. He said the smell you get when one is hit by a car is nothing even close to the smell of what he was getting. He sat up all night outside with his gun, to get them as the came out. Then he dug down about 1 foot and 6 feet out, buried chain link fence, so they couldn't get back under. I just remember him coming to work reeking of skunk for awhile. Good luck with your pests

Bait a trap with sardines. You'll get your skunk.

It's been over 15 years since I've had or even smelled a skunk. Fifteen years ago is when the nearest neighbor( 4.5 miles away) and I agreed to quit burning our garbage in a burn barrel. Not so much to deter skunks as to prevent the dangers from wildfires. Skunks was just a side benefit. In the good "old" days I would dispatch 3-4 skunks every summer.

RSKY - there is something around your place or the neighborhood that the skunks are eating. Contain that food source and you will reduce your skunks.

Skunks normally don't travel far from their home either. There is another skunk mak'in hole near by.

Strange as it may seem, I had a friend (RIP) many years ago, and he could not smell the skunk smell. I though he was BS'n me, but found out that about 1 person in 1000 cannot smell a skunk.

Worst skunk smell I ever encountered was when I woke up to an awful smell one morning at a hotel. It was horrible. Had a burned element to the odor. They tried to say, initially, that a belt on a dryer had worn out and was smoking. That was BS and found out later that a skunk had gotten into a dryer exhaust vent and sprayed.

I got a direct hit from a skunk.
My parents were on vacation, I was still living at home. About midnight I walked up on porch, I never saw it (no moon and in country). I was putting key in lock when wham...I thought someone punched me in the nose! Just pure pain. I ran in house, finally could smell it. I put clothes outside and took several baths. I opened all windows and put fan in doorway all night.

Ugh, skunks! I shoot 2-3 most years with my 20 gauge. Also, I used my Troy-bilt Horse to till around all my out-buildings and then laid chicken wire down before I seeded over it with grass. The chicken wire keeps them from digging under the out-buildings and the shotgun keeps their visit to my property a one-way ticket.
