Depending on the span and load range required, I would trust 2 angle irons that size welded together to make a square tube, if you have enough.

I want to use a piece of 1/4 x 2 x 2 angle iron for an axle. I cut 2 - 2 inch pieces for the ends. Will bore a hole and attach wheels with a bolt.

What is the best way to align the ends for welding?

Without any information other than what you've given us and realizing this is the bare minimum, I'd just weld a piece of shaft in the inside corners of the angle iron and have it stick out far enough to be the axles.

Now that is the ticket. Fits better with my skill level (none) too.

Since I can't post a picture I will try to ease the worry with a few details.
The axles are 18 inches wide
Wheels are 10" HF
Load is 4 x 6 HF band saw

No you will not be meeting me pulling this down the interstate. Will just be going from shed to under my tree.

For inspiration, here's what I do with 10" wheels on my welding carts.



I plug weld the (solid round stock) axle to the inside of square tube.

18" sounds narrow unless it's for ease of storage, as band-saws tend to be top-heavy. Could QA outriggers help at all?

If you mean HFT's pneumatic tires then I'd foam them or expect tip-overs when haulin' 'er out/in.

I too like everything mobile. And if not with wheels/castors, with sufficient clearance underneith to get a pump truck under.

I am very fortunate to be in a position to dip into my teenage daughter's potential inheritance money.

I think she realizes it is more 'financially advantageous' to let me indulge in my shop activities than put me in one of the sketchy retirement homes she's been threatening me with.
