The cheap one is the "dynamo" style. I belive, unfortunately, the YM1700 takes the expensive "delco" style unit. I doubt the expensive one will be a Yanmar brand alternator if it is new. They list for $504.00. Must be an aftermart part or someone just needs to get rid of it.

I believe I would forget about the $500 starter and the $200 alternator for now, and get a $5 volt/ohm meter and do some troubleshooting.

If the alt is bad I would have your core rebuilt for a $100 bucks or so and have a unit almost as good as new.

When I bought my 1700, it had a non working alternator. When i went to repair it, I found it wasn't the oem alternator, but was a hitatchi someone had thrown on. It fit the oem brackets FINE. I went to the alternator mom-n-pop shop and got a rebuilt hitatchi with the same case and swapped my pulley over, and they sold me a VR that went for an old chrysler product... alltogether was 80 bucks... charged great!.. I also added a voltmeter.

Soundguy, the OEM alternator for the YM1700 is a Hitachi: LT115-52

A new direct replacement is $99. We have them in stock.

Thanks,

Yanmar used Hitachi alternators on YM1700 and YM2000.

AutoZone stocks rebuilt alternator # 14105, specified for 1970-1973 Datsun (Nissan) model 510 sedan. (without A/C).

It is an Hitachi alternator that looks identical to the Yanmar version and mounts in the same space. There are some trivial differences:

You need to swap over your pulley shield.

35 amp capacity in place of 15 amp.

price only $39.99. (plus $15 refundable core charge).

I've used this alternator for a year, and it works fine.

The A/C version alternator for Datsun 510 has 50 amp output but is a little larger diameter, so that might require a longer adjustment arm and belt. It might be preferable if you want to power an inverter.

Also, the $22 Wells regulator that AutoZone offers for Datsun 1970 - 1973 is a direct replacement for the original Yanmar one - same connectors and mounting, and they test identical on Autozone's test rig.

I suggest start by taking in your alternator and regulator together to be tested.

However, the hitatchi onmine was not the lt115-52.

it was a quick bolt on from a junkyard presumably.. not even hooke dup.. just there for the belt... At the time I knew nothing about tractors, and the guy lied and said it was charging.. even though the wires under the dash wer cut and just 'laying there'.

I'm not sure of the number of the hitatchi i got as a replacement.. but it fit and worked great.
