Alltel cell phone internet

All i can get where i live is dial-up or dish wild blue internet which is expensive. I've just recently learned that i can get the internet thru my cell phone with Alltel for 25 dollars/month unlimited. It does not count against my cell phone time and the speed is supose to be near dsl speed. Does anyone use this method and are there any pros and cons that you have experienced using this? I plan on hooking up to my desktop computer and later get a laptop when I'm away.

If your cell phone has a good signal, then your service (internet) should be good with them too. Make sure you have at least a bar or two or service...your computer won't be as strong as your cell phone in reaching the repeater tower.

Also, make sure your laptop is wireless card compatible. Otherwise it won't work, or you'll have to install one.

Make sure you tell them (Alltel) the situation and that you want all the disconnection charges/cancellation charges/fees waived if it doesn't work. Get it all in writing.

I would make sure that your Alltel mobile phone Internet service is not just mobile phone based. Most services like this are only capable of being used on the phone itself, and can't provide a high-speed connection to your PC.

This is new technology Kyocera PC Mobility - Kyocera KR1 Mobile Router This link is to a router designed specifically for cellular towers and dsl and above speeds. It's not widely available yet but if you can get it, it should beat sat internet hands down. By the way I have been checking and it's not available to my area.
