Advice Please On Removing JD Quick Attach Pin

/ Advice Please On Removing JD Quick Attach Pin #21
I think the hole saw idea works. I've built a couple of JD QA implements and I just cut the hole for the pin with a hole saw and then welded it on the backside. Not much work. Although you can buy the pins, it's a common size and I just used standard pins. If I remember correctly, it's the top pin on a Cat 3 hitch. (Just my memory, better check to be sure.)

Victory!
Pin is tight and fits good enough for now. We'll mount the unit on the tractor for final fit and welding.
In the end I used the drill a ton of little holes around the perimeter of the pin then cut out the bulk of the pin.
Turns out the weld went halfway through the thickness of the plate, so grinding was not a good option.
The hole saw was a good idea, but I went with what I had on hand!
Once the center bulk of the pin was gone it was a matter of grinding and filing the remaining metal to true up and size the hole.

Thank you to all for the great ideas.

Pin. You can see how deep the weld will go.

Decent fit.

Be sure to clean up every bit of the rust from that pin. Nice shiny bright metal is what you need for welding.

Yup, I leave the important welding to my friend down the street who is a professional welder!

Good for you, it would not have been as good, I would have cut the pin off flush with a cut off wheel, and sized the new one, and welded from the front. Bet what you did took a minute.

It did take a while and broke one drill bit.
I have not looked so I am not sure if there is room to weld the pin on the loader side.

Hi all,
On the hay spear frame I have I need to replace one of the lower quick attach pins.
It is welded into a hole on the hay spear frame and the back side is accessible.
I don't have a torch available and it would probably make a mess anyways.
Grinding seems to be the best option but what to use?
I'm thinking about some kind of pointy grinding stone maybe to cut the weld?
As you can see in the picture with the arrow, the weld is pretty much flush with the plate.

Before I start cutting away at it I figured you guys may have some good suggestions.
Thanks.

Was able to get replacement pins at a reasonable cost.

One approach might be to saw off the old pin as close as you can with a sawzall or hacksaw and then drill it out with a holesaw. This would give you a nice clean hole for the new pin.
