Question, I would like to add a in line hydraulic filter between the remote control valve which is on the top of my ford 641 hydraulic reservior and a SA cylinder.

So this filter would need to be bi-directional, handle 3000 psi, and I think that model ford puts out around 3 gpm.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what would be a good filter for that application?

In and out port could be 3/8 or 1/2.

I have seen filters, like the Arrow 9054 GU 1/2" In-Line Filter, that I think could handle the psi and gpm but I can not determine if it could handle the bi-directional.

Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Thanks for your reply.

I need to filter between the control valve and the cylinder because the valve sets on the casting of the tractor and I do not have a line below the valve that I can connect the filter to.

Because of that the filter would be in the line between the valve and cylinder.

I am wanting to protect the tactor valve against anything coming back from the cylinder. I do not know the history of the cylinder and just want to protect tractors valve, pump, etc.

The cylinder is a SA with just one line and will have oil going in both directions, so need a bi directional filter.

I am not so sure you will have a problem with a cyl's fluid needing to be filtered. If you use the same logic for every component in the hyd system, you would have filters all over the place. Just doesn't seem feasible. Sometimes there are filters in the tank, and then a filter might be on the suction side of the pump, and then there is the return filter to keep debris out of the tank. You could probably jury rig up something using two filters and check valves so the fluid going into the cyl is filtered, and then the return fluid might flow through the other filter and check valve.

Bi-directional filter.

DFFH Series
HYDAC DFFH Reverse Flow and DFFHM Bi-Directional Flow Filters are designed for use on hydrostatic transmissions, hydraulic test equipment, and other applications in which the filter housing must provide two directions for fluid flow. It has a maximum operating pressure of 6000 PSI. Maximum filter flow is 100 GPM. There are 5 filter sizes and ports range from 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" SAE ports or 1-1/4" to 2" flange ports. Filter media is available as Absolute-Rated Betamicron 3 Plus® in 3, 5, 10 and 20 micron in low and high collapse media and Nominal in 25, 74 and 149 micron wire screen and 3, 5, 10 and 20 micron metal fiber. Differential pressure indicator available.

You can bet, that they are not cheap.

sure you do.. you just aren't trying hard :)

for about 100$ you can get a power beyond plate that goes under yer remote valve. it has an in / out port. you could run that loop thru yer filter.. then ALL the hyds would be constantly filtered.

PS.. 4gpm on that pump

ps.. if connectiong an unknown cyl.. just pull the lines and drain then and manually exercise the cyl to drian it.. then re plumb and go and bleed er' a lil. but the filter add is easy beans.... ford had a kit that installed it in the side of the housing interupting flow to the top cover. you would be doing just about the same using the PB plate loop to simply stick a filter inline.

Thanks for your reply.

Clean the cylinder. If you aren't comfortable with just manually cycling it to flush it, pull it apart and give it a good cleaning. Lot of rigmarole and cost to install a filter, etc when a bit of cleaning would do.

the tractor would likely benefit form a filter.. but it's made it this long without one. even back then they were optional.. and I have seen scant FEW with them...

.

To be safe, this method REQUIRES a filter, head, and plumbing rated for 2000psi or better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks all for your reply - this cylinder is acutually a one arm loader cylinder. It has not been used for a few years. Looks good on the out side.

I have cycled it by hand several times. Letting it suck oil in from a bucket and pushing it back out by contracting it.

Getting no rust or metal, but getting a few black specks, that when you touch them they seem to desolve. They appear to be grease blobs to me. At first there were a few around the size of a finger nail clipping. Now most are less then a 1/8 inch around. Last cycle I got about four of these blobs.

I suppose the right thing to do is pull that cylinder apart and inspect and put a new packing seal kit in it. Was hoping to not have to repack, but do not want to cause a tractor problem. So was thinking a filter would be a simple work around. I did not realize a that bi-directional would be so hard to find.

I have not splite one of these cylinders before before - - - If any of you have done so - - - how hard it is going to be to unscrew the collar on that big cylinder.

Second question for soundguy. From what I see in the book on adding a FORD ADD-ON HYDRAULIC FILTER, - - I am assuming that the kit includes some piping modification that you have inside the hydraulic tank. Is that the case?

Sure.. but they had already listed a 6000 psi unit up there.. so i figured that is what he would use. also hard to find hose rated under 2000 psi. even cheap 2 wire TSC pre made hose is 4000 burst. guess you might hunt up some 1 wire or that junky pneumatic no wire stuff that was 1000 psi and have issues.. but that would be harder to find than the better stuff.

for a 1-arm loader I think he's way over thinking this unless he just wants to add a filter to the system.
