Most engines seem to have a flywheel to a clutch. I have a situation where I will be repowering a skid steer from an engine with an output shaft. I could just go with a Honda v twin with the right shaft diameter but it seems for the same money I can buy a Yanmar with around the same displacement. But how would I couple the flywheel to a shaft output?

I built a little generator unit with a surplus Yanmar engine a few years ago. I just cut a 1/4" steel plate that would bolt to the flywheel. It had a hole cut in the center of the plate where I could weld a flexible jaw coupling. The coupling was almost press fit tight in the hole so it was easy to center and it was all CNC cut so, while not perfectly centered I'm sure, it was pretty darn close. Worked really well.
