Why is it that when I open up a thread the ads take up half the page? I attached an image for example...

Might try changing your Compatibility setting and see if it helps. I am running IE10 and do not have to run in Compatibility view.

from your image it looks like the ad is about 1/4 the page...

just curious what browser you are using? I recommend Firefox (but even the ad-blocking scripts may not help with the sizing issue)

...when things are way out of proportion it is often a CSS (browser) compatibility issue...

Which version of internet explorer are you running?

Sterff's attached image looks like about a fourth of the page to me, too, and it's what I also get; ads down the right side of the page, but I hadn't considered it a problem. And of course, I only use IE11.

At this point, updating from IE 9 would be highly recommended from a security perspective. If you need to keep IE at version 9 for some reason (like a site that requires it), might I suggest installing Firefox or Chrome and using that for your general internet browsing, then reserving IE9 for the few sites that may require it?
If you do that, also install the AdBlock Plus addon for Firefox or Chrome and you will have a much more ad free browsing experience.

I am not sure if Firefox is the way to go either. I have been getting a lot of ads on firefox as well. I am currently using Safari.

Firefox does not block ads by itself, you need an adblocker add on (such as AdBlockPlus) to block them
I run Firefox with Adblock Plus and ads that show up are few and far between.
