had this old generator given to me, got the engine running (seized plungers in injection pumps) but can't seem to make it generate any power. its a Chicago electric 1665 10kw alternator. when fielded the unit will make short bursts of power but when full fielded the engine stalls. I don't know if this points to a voltage regulator issue or the alternator itself. unfortunately the engine and alternator has been discontinued so original parts are impossible to find.. any input is appreciated.

Hey Chris,
It's a generator, it's not magic. Look at other units that are similar in power. Look at what they are using to make it work. Look for a user manual on-line.

You should be able to make this work.

Probably s bad capacitor on gen head. If it's been sitting a while, it's bad. Check for one.

How are you applying power to the field? Never heard of the term "fielded". Without load, applying field current should not effect engine load.

Brushed or brushless? If brushless, possible shorted diodes.

You're talking the generator end of the machine correct not the motor end? Reason I ask is that looks like a small engine R/R for battery charging..........Mike

I think my initial test to power field was done incorrectly as I powered 12vDC directly to one of the 120v outlets while running and this caused the alternator to try to motor. I pulled the end cover off yesterday and put 12vDC to the main capacitor and it started generating power (at least enough to run a drill) Ive got some capacitors on order now.

I would flash the field by plugging a corded drill and spinning the chuck by hand while the trigger is held down all the way without risking frying anything.
