Abbreviations and TLA\'s

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( <font color="red"> "Beenthere in Attachments/Brush Hog Wheel thread said"</font> ....I just get confused a bit when BH doesn't refer to a back hoe. I probably wouldn't catch on to RC as always being a rotary cutter, but I can be a bit slow or misled easily too. Not a huge problem for me, just that newcomers (foreigners?) can get even more confused when trying to sort through the postings at about 1 a minute here. I wonder if there is an abbreviation identification or usage page? ....We know what we mean, but the listener or reader doesn't know for sure.

I agree about the abreviations - took me a while to figure out what you guys were talking about. I still have to scratch my head every once in a while. So here's my attempt at reducing some confusion for new people.

<font color="green"> COMMON ABBREVIATIONS USED ON TBN </font>

SCUT = Sub-Compact Utility Tractor

BB = Back Blade or Box Blade

FEL = Front End Loader

Re: Abbreviations and TLA\'s

Not necessarily tractor related, but the acronym here on TBN (TractorByNet) that took me the longest:

ROTF - Rolling on the floor

and the variation:
ROTFLMAO - Rolling on the floor laughing my (posterior) off

Re: Abbreviations and TLA\'s

HOLY COW!!!

For the past 2+ years I've been puzzling out each new TLA that I saw and there was a list on the board!!!!

This should prolly be moved to the general area and made sticky.

Don't forget the ever lovely, TLB, Tractor-Loader-Backhoe. Surely a thing of beauty. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Abbreviations and TLA\'s

Mike,

As I recall, when Muhammad posted that list, there was quite a bit of discussion about adding a dictionary to TBN. In fact, I believe his list is in response to comments about needing some kind of list. The comments may be even attached to Muhammad's thread.

Anyway, I believe that the idea kind of died for the "lack of second", so to speak. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I seem to remember that some of the posters felt that anyone wanting to know what these abbreviations stood for could do a search for them. Of course, there were others that commented on how someone is supposed to do a search for something that they don't even know is out there. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

It got almost as interesting as the good ole HST vs Gear discussions! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Abbreviations and TLA\'s

I agree on adding the dictionary.
Putting it under the FAQ's would be a good location.

Not only does it need to have tractor abreviations, but other message board shorthand too. I'm one of the minority in computerland who still types out the entire words, and there's times when I have to stop and figure out what things like ROFLMAO mean.

Re: Abbreviations and TLA\'s

I'm not sure that board shorhand should be mixed in with tractor terminology. This might be confusing to someone who is already familiar with message board shorthand, and is trying find figure out what a tractor term means.

Re: Abbreviations and TLA\'s

I too have to read several posts into a thread on many acromyms, but eventually figure out a close meaning. But then 20 years in the Navy gives me some advantage.

Re: Abbreviations and TLA\'s

That section should be added. Another cool thing they have over on YTmag is a "article" area. So if you wrote a short article about setting a tractor up with TnT, it could be published there, and referenced.

I may have a leg up on you. I am ex-NASA and they really sling the acronyms around. I have seen as many as 6 meanings for the same acronym, it all depends on the system or program you are talking about. They publish a thick dictionary of acronym. I, too, sometimes have to take a minute or two to figure out the usage on TBN although sooner or later something in a thread will explain.
