I decided it was time to build a PTO shaft hanger for my rotary cutter today.

I looked around for materiel's, and didn't find much.:mad: I did come up with a screw in hanger of abut the right size, and a piece of 1/4 inch all thread about 2 inches long..
OK, this will have to do for now. IMG_20140512_141239_388.jpg

I cut the hanger on an angle and likewise one end of the all thread to more or less match the angle of one of the rotary cutters supports.IMG_20140512_142501_263.jpg

I drilled the support, to receive the all-thread.IMG_20140512_135958_480.jpg
Next I clamped down the two pieces of metal to get ready to TIG weld them together. How do you like my Rube Goldberg Clamping arrangement? Pretty ingenious huh?:)
IMG_20140512_143934_666.jpgIMG_20140512_145935_214.jpg

Here it is after being TIGed. It is lousy cadmium plated hardware.. I filed some of it off, but you don't get rid of all of the contamination., but it turned out OK.IMG_20140512_150217_505.jpgIMG_20140512_150450_072.jpg

Here it is installed on the support of the cutter with a spot of black paint.IMG_20140512_151355_453.jpg and here is the PTO shaft resting on it.IMG_20140512_151419_169.jpg

It is probably not the sturdiest hanger ever built but if it breaks, I will just drill a larger hole and make something bigger.:) It is a 0$ project, except for a few cents of argon for the welder and some scrap.

Looks good to me.:thumbsup:

Thanks TripleR, yours was my inspiration. :thumbsup:

Would one of you be interested in making one for my tiller? I will pay you for time, materials, and shipping.

Thanks,
Jeff

Mine came that way; fabrication is something I have to leave to my brother or sons, wish I could help.

It appears that you can keep your stuff in side, and that is great,

but I have always found it best to spate the PTO shafts and keep there separate in storage and then clean and lubricate and slip them back together when need and used, it does not take much to rust them to the point where one can not move them. having the hook to hold the machine part up off the dirt is good tho,

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
a chunk of wire works (not very pretty) but will work to hold the PTO shaft up if needed. just remove before using so it can not get tangled up,
It might be kind of hard with you tiller in NC and me in MO. to get things right.. send some pictures with how the PTO shaft would be hung in mind. remember the shaft must go up and down with the 3PT. and the hanger cannot interfere with this range of motion. Send me some pix, and we will see.
And lemme tell ya, if anything can get tangled up in a PTO shaft, it WILL!:shocked:
All it takes is lack of imagination and fabrication skills=no problem for me. :eek:
Seriously though...your hanger looks great and now I'm determined to finally do something like that. I've used the bungees long enough and lost a few when I forget to store them after attaching the mower. It's only been 10+ years...no use rushing into this stuff. :)
Hey, whatever works.:) You must have some sort of quick hitch, I see you have some bent washers for the ends of your 3pt pins. I made up some of those when I was using the Carters version of a Quick Hitch.
I just got a Pat's Easy Change a few weeks ago. It works amazingly well and makes me wonder why I waited all these years. As one ages it helps to find ways to ease the work and avoid strains, and the hitch does that.
But I don't want to hijack the thread. Your PTO hanger has motivated me to finally do something about replacing the bungees. One of the reasons I took the photos is so I can sit here, look at them, and come up with a solution similar to yours. I have a cable crimper, various small cables, and crimps; so I'm thinking I might do something with that.
If I do come up with something I'll post it here.
How about something like a threaded hook to hang the free end of say a 1/8 inch cable with a crimped on loop on that end and the other end could be a closed eye then you crimp on a loop thru that eye.. So you wind up drilling two holes in the support of the "hog" for the closed eye and the hook eye hardware.. How about that... I thunk it out for you.:D
OR a snap hook on the free end, and another closed eye bolt so that you can snap the free end back to the support so it dont flop around. how about that?
Hey, slow down. I can't move that fast!. :confused2: After all, it has been 10 years--what's another year or two? :)
But yes, I was thinking something along those lines. While I'm at it I may try to incorporate another bolt on one support arm to mount a small pvc pipe with end caps to store shear bolts which I now keep in the tool box.
It's on my tractor now and I still have some more tilling to do. Once it comes off I will send a photo of attached and unattached to see if it's feasible. You're right, it does look a bit cramped for space while attached. Thank you!
I had a couple of eye bolts and caribiner on hand to make a hanger for my rotary mower PTO shaft. I still plan to add a second bolt on the left arm in the photo to attach a shear pin holder. I need to get more bolts to make a hanger for the finish mower.
Yep simple solution to a problem.. Wow... makes you wonder why you didn't do that 10 years ago:cool2:
That's for sure! Your post is what finally motivated to do something. I will make one for the finish mower next and then the snowblower.
Thanks for the ideas.
Your very welcome!. Sometimes all it takes is a little push and seeing someone else do something to get us to act. Your solution would probably work even in a "tight" space like a tiller, and it sure is a simple self storing solution.
