A more robust Rodent Proofing solution? Is JD purposefully failing to address?

I've read where mice can fit through a 1/4" opening. i park my tractor in an open field as rodents prefer brush cover close to where they nest. also keep my hood open as they shy away from daylight where they nest. good luck on that

Maybe a 1/4" size opening in one dimension, but not a 1/4" diameter hole, nor a 1/4" hardware cloth.

i had a rodent eat thru my plastic fuel tank. i ended up patching it and surrounded entire tank in 1/4" steel mesh. that was like 8-9 years ago. no more issue. rodents also got my wiring harness....some wheres. random fuse blowouts and repairs. the last straw was a constant short in starting circuit. i got a new harness from kioti for around $250 back 6-7 years ago and replaced it myself. did it in about 2 hours. no issues since.
you CANNOT stop rodents, but our bark cats are now allowed access to tractor and truck storage. issue resolved itself.
