I don't see any reason not to use 1000 rpm pto if you have it. I would, but my rear pto is only has the 540 speed (less, obviously, if I run the engine at less than pto speed).

I would definitely consider a log lift. It is not that tough to add when you're designing the splitter. BTW, those are pretty big logs you're planning on splitting, so you're going to want as much ram force as you can get, along with appropriately sized wedges, unless you plan to first rip them to smaller sizes with a chainsaw.

If you have the power beyond option already and are building on the budget build the minimal you need using what you have.

I started mine with the beam, axle, bought cylinder and valve. Have kept eye out for stuff as it comes avaiable engines, pumps, more cylinders.

It has turned into a awesome splitter. I used it with pokey power beyond for 2 years and found a BIG PUMP on a 100hp turbo charged Cummins. Brand new (25 Hrs) motor had went thru a flood and needed some TLC. At a fast idle it burns a gallon per hour. Rebuilding stuff now: log lifts, 4ways, elevators...

Point being: lots of stuff out there if you are patient and have a vision and are flexiable with options.

Harvey--thanks, good advice. I've started collecting parts but have a ways to go.

My problem is I don't have the power beyond option on my Kubota and have to weigh that expense against the other options. It would be a DIY project. I'm leaning toward installing it as I'm sure I can find other uses. At this point I want to avoid having another gasoline engine to maintain.
