You must have a much more expensive unit than we have... Ours just has a simple on-of toggle switch.
Far as drying boots and shoes however, your best bet is still a floor register and it has an added benefit...
As it dries them, it imparts moisture in the air and in the wintertime, moisture in the air is a good thing. Keeps wood from drying out, no static electricity sparks from your fingers and if your ambient moisture content inside is above 50%, you can turn the heat down and not feel cold.
We keep our abode at 55-60% RH all the time. We have 2 large Honeywell evaporative humidifiers in the house that run all winter. Amazing when you have humidity, no crusty noses either.
