Backup cameras have a wide field of view. You need a camera with a narrow field of view:

Correct Xfax. I think mine is 50° maybe 60°. I'll have to look at the book. The original camera, I bought was way too wide to be of much use.

Fallon, I started an FEL camera installation on my cab tractor a couple of years ago following your lead, but got sidetracked and never got back to it. From your post, it sounds like procrastination may be rewarded. Curious why you didn't use it much.

Screen brightness was always an issue, even with the hood on it was hard to see. The resolution ends up being pretty low, even the ones advertised as HD are pretty low. When you combine that with a little dirt it ends up being really bury.

I too switched to a better camera with a narrower field of view for the front. Mine is mounted on a pole off the loader, that another member (Waxman) did.

I have one from Rearview Systems: Backup Camera Safety Kits & Accessories Paid more but it had a 5 year warranty. Installed it on 9-2-2012 and it is still working great.

The monitor is right of the steering wheel, low enough to see out the windshield over it. The camera is over the right front wheel, pointed down to see what is out there and see the the SSQA plate when changing attachments:

This is what I posted about 4 years ago.

I have to say that I am still disappointed with my system. The screen is just too small for working. I have a 7" monitor. And, I'm in a cab, but the sunlight is still too much for me to see enough detail.

I've put about 40 hours on my tractor in the past week, about half of that with the tiller and the other half with my blade doing some laser leveling. I find myself looking at my mirrors a lot more than looking at my monitor. Oh well....

For those without a cab, is this actually worthwhile doing?

After using it for a few months, and then having problems, I have not repaired it and have completely removed everything. It just was not worth the effort and money for me. I could never see enough detail in the monitor during daylight hours. And I have a cab tractor.

No sun problems with mine. You can see the sun on parts of the screen in some of the pictures, above.

LOL, my only problem is that my flashing strobe tints the blown snow a bright yellow.
Must say that for $50.00 I sure have gotten my money's worth.
Perhaps being cabbed is to my advantage.
I will admit when I do get very close to an obstruction (like wife's car I look back just to be sure I don't dent it)

I have had all the pieces for a couple of years, but haven't yet gotten around to doing an installation. My intended mounting method for the front camera is a Nootle ( [URL="http://www.grifiti.com/nootle/grifiti-nootle-magnetic-mini-ball-head-camera-stand.html"[/URL] ). My primary interest was in being able to monitor the tip of my hydraulic auger, but seeing the exact positioning of the grapple teeth will help with ripping up roots and stumps. Now, I just have to get off my rear and actually do the install!

Thanks! I think that offset cab works to your advantage with the camera setup, being able to eyeball the left while viewing the right on the screen.

Where are you guys getting cheap narrow angle view cameras for the front. Tried searching amazon but most cameras are wide angle.

I think I will start with a rear view camera for hooking up attachments then set up the front one later.

my plan is to suction mount the monitor to the top right corner of the windshield and run the wiring through the roof. Seems like going through the roof is less complicated than down under the tractor, especially since I want to mount the camera high up to get a better view of the implement beyond my quick hitch.

one more question does the cheap monitor have the 1/4-20 female nut in the monitor or is it in the frame that clips onto the monitor.

I just received this kit early for father's day. Resolution is good for the price. I hooked up one camera here on the counter and I'm very pleased so far. Will let you know how it goes after the install.

I've recently learned that cheaper isn't better. I'm by no means an expert but I'll tell you what I did and what I learned. I bought a set with monitor and 2 wired cameras on Amazon. $75-ish. I installed the rear in a fixed position on the back of the cab. The front I mounted to an industrial magnet so I could use it on the forks or the bucket. The wire connections on the front were an issue from day one and both cameras had problems in varying light conditions. Because it was video cable I didn't want to try shortening so I was left with a couple of fist sized balls of extra wiring just waiting to get snagged. I think it was the price point I went in at but my monitor didn't have good mounting options.

I just purchased a wireless system (it's not really wireless, the cameras need power but they transmit wirelessly) I went with a higher price point and the monitor looks much more versatile in mounting.

That's my .02¢. if you have any specific questions I'd be happy to help if I can. For the record going after a pallet on the ground if you can get the front camera working is sooooo easy.

Looking to install both a front and rear camera, wireless, preferably IOS that I can use ipad as monitor. Would be great if both are on screen same time but selectable.

Has anybody tried to put one on an open station tractor? Realize this is an very old discussion. I wanted to mount the camera and screen on a board attached to the fender, but was warned the picture would wash out. I thought about making a hood around the screen. Wonder how deep it would have to be?

Yea, mine is open station as well. Was thinking perhaps a hood, like for a drone screen, but possibly has to be a moveable mount that can be tilted/turned.

That was why I though of mounting it on a board, the camera and the monitor could be adjusted and removed. It seems like you could make a 3" hood out of aluminum flashing painted black. I was going to attach the board to the fender with magnets and just tap into a hot electric wire.

About the bigest screen I see is 7 inches.... so it can't be very far from you. May just bite the bullet and get a cheap one and experment?

I would love one to see what's coming out the back of my top dresser. Being in the security business for thirty years or so, my only criteria is that it have a SONY CCD (Chip). That seems to make a world of difference in quality. I know people that bought cheap cameras and one by one they all slowly lost picture quality and then died. I don't like throwing money away, no matter how little.
