Can you give us a better description of what the history is of your tractor, and what led up to the reverse not working?

Help us out a bit here...

Have you looked at the linkage?

Sounds like you have a Power Reverser. Is it mechanically or electrically operated?

It is an electonic switch and apparently involves wiring and a relay etc. There was no warning other than an hour before (while feeding) it quit and then worked. The f/r lever ( on the left of the steering colum) does feel looser, and more warn than one would remember fron 3 or 4000 hours ago.

A cab tractor?

Might be a good time to get the service tech manual so you can check out the function of the switch, wiring and relay that might be involved.

Looking at jdparts, it appears (tho I admit I do not know for sure) it might be a control module that has lever and internal switch.

But others may be able to offer more help here.

A pic of the apparent problem area might help some. Specific model of the 6410 may also help to track it down.

I does sound like a wornout lever/switch.

When you engage forward, does the lever stay in the forward slot or does it fall back to neutral? If it falls back, have you tried to hold it in forward to see if it will move?

i have a 6415 with power quad transmission
if has left hand reverser
the reverser is manual and does not have fwd and rev electric solenoids
the transmission pressure is 200 psi and i have a gage on it, it has good pressure at 1400 rpm
runs the tractor for about 40 minutes and it will warm up and loose pressure in fwd direction shift to neutral and the rev it will back up
it only stops pulling in fwd direction
i have pulled the 3 relief valve and the all look good
i pulled the fwd and rev manual valves they all look good
i pulled the cooling oil and clutch cooling valve and it looks ok
i also pulled the valve that the left hand reverser moves and it all looked good with no issues

i would appreciate any help greatly

thanks

Sounds like the forward clutch is leaking.
I am guessing there are ports labeled clutch for Forward, and brake for Reverse. Check pressures at the these ports.

checked pressure at these ports and both forward and reverse measure right at 100 psi

after about 50 minutes of use fwd drops to 50 and will intermittently pull
reverse stays at 100 psi

what technical manual do I need?

thank you for all your help

The diagnostic manual is TM4572 and the repair manual is TM4574. Do you have mfwd? If so, check clutch pressures with mfwd turned on and off to see if there is any difference. Also try with pto turned on and off.

Just an FYI the manuals TM4572 & TM4574 are for JD 6410 (thread title) NOT JD 6415

regarding john deere 6415

I have the fwd clutch drum out and will take it apart today I will replace all the piston and seals as I put it back together
I have not yet take apart the front of the transmission should I do that to check things? I have no linings failing that I can see
is there anything out towards the valve body I should check that can be leaking the oil? and oil tubes, plastic parts or seals that route the oil to the fwd clutch drum

thanks for all your help

regarding the 6415 john deere
I did not see any change when the pto and or the mfwd was activated I see the pressure blip briefly showing oil change and activation but it comes back immediately

the oil pressure falls off in the forward direction only and will go to 50 or below and stop pulling

Be sure to check the "drum", I saw a post where they guy found the drum was cracked, causing an internal leak.
