For those of you that had the problem with the wheels digging ruts on the 2520, did it cost you anything to get it fixed? My dealer wants about $160 to replace the wheels. The tractor is still on warrantee and I bought the extended warrantee and maintenance plan if it makes a difference.

Thanks,
Bruce

If you have a stuborn dealer you may have to make a call to JD customer service to get a little help.

You could always do it yourself for the cost of a drill bit, tap set and 2 zerks. I was a little leary of "carving up" my deck, but my dealer has been very little help on other issues. It works/looks great and from what I have heard here, it's how the engineers have handled it on the *new* model 62D. I agree it's something that should have been factory/dealer fixed considering the $ involved, but in my world necessity is the mother of invention. Let me know if you want any more details about this diy fix.

I got my wheels for free from my JD dealer. I never asked him to install them I just installed them myself and drilled and tapped for the zerks myself. The only thing additional I did was to grind a groove in the shaft so the grease going into the zerks has a place to go. This made a huge difference in getting enough grease inside and having it stay there. Took me two hours to do the whole thing which included replacing all four wheels.

Great idea! The wheels on my deck don't seem to have a problem with holding grease, but the pivot shaft on the two front wheels never seems to get grease properly. Where they put the Zerk, all the grease goes down, and none goes up. I may cut a grove in the shaft and see if that helps.

Thanks for the idea!

Here's what I did. You just need to scribe a line around the shaft at the location of the zerk. then I used the corner of my bench grinder wheel to simply grind a shallow groove around the shaft at that location. My wheels pivoted even better after doing this than after installing the zerk with no groove. I tried it both ways.

Thanks BX1. How old was your deck that it didn't come with the wheels that swiveled and had Zerk's? My deck is a little over a year old and it came with swiveling wheels plus Zerk's in each wheel and the swivel joint.

BigD9, I just got my tractor this spring but apparently my dealer had a late 2006 deck that he sold me. The wheels are mounted on needle bearings and do have grease fittings. The pivot did not have grease zerks. I wasn't too happy when I found out that after ordering a "new" tractor I got an "old" deck but he promptly ordered the new wheels as soon as I told him that I learned on this forum that they were available. He normally does not sell small tractors so he doesn't usually know a lot about them. But his prices are right. I offered to install the wheels myself and thereby was able to keep my old wheels as well. Even though they are a different shape I'll keep them for spares and/or use them on some other project some day. I think they are expensive wheels. So I'm curious, even though you have a deck that came with zerks there are no grooves to channel the grease around? The groove might be in the bushing rather than the shaft. That would be the best place to put it in order to not weaken the shaft with a groove. It would have been hard for me to put a groove on the female bushing so I just but a very shallow one on the shaft. It really made the grease go in easy and definitely improved the pivot of the wheels. Good luck with yours.
