So for the same amount of weight overloaded they fine you differently based on what road ur on?

Around here GVW is a joking matter. I've never seen anyone get checked. I'd have to get rid of my dump truck and rollback if they did. My dump truck could haul 2500 pounds maybe a tad less staying legal and the roll back could do about the same. The dump truck hauls a good solid 3 tons and I've done 4.5. The rollback hauls 5 tons good and has done 7.

I was 83k only good for 80k the ticket was 120.00 on route 93 its by the pound (.04) The state road would have been 100.00 then 250.00 for the second time

That's my viewpoint also. A fine is one thing, a fatal accident because you pushed the limits too far is another. I stopped into a coworker's house one night He had just driven through town with his company 1/2 ton pickup, pulling 3 yards of stone in a tandem axle dump trailer with no brakes hooked up, . That load was well over 5 tons.

I own a 2015 F150 (4x4 supercab with a 6' bed) with the 3.5L twin turbo ecoboost, I own a 22' 14k equipment trailer, and I own a tractor that weighs about 8000lbs with the backhoe onboard. I haul on the interstates as well as secondary roads and even some rather "backwoods" gravel roads. It is fine for a half dozen 100-mile round trips per year as needed when you load properly and use a weight distributing hitch that is properly sized and setup.

It should also be said I don't try to run at the speed limits when loaded to the hilt. I go slow enough I have a little less momentum to reign in than those around me if needed, but fast enough I don't create a bottleneck behind me.

When I take the backhoe, it puts me over GVW by a couple hundred pounds, but it seldom leaves the farm. Generally I am taking my rotary cutter and grapple, which weighs less than the backhoe and loader bucket. That puts me a little under GVW. Only time I've had the backhoe off the farm I used secondary roads where overloaded farm traffic is common.

All this said, I repeat: it is fine for a half dozen 100-mile round trips per year. I'd hate to do it to earn a living.

The stupid bumper pull campers behind a 1/2 tons should be illegal. There's nothing worse for fish tailing. A trailer that's too heavy with working breaks is still much safer IMO. And when I overload my trucks it's 30mph trips and only going a few miles. I wouldn't go very far mostly because the tires can't take it.

You might also consider updating your current trailer to 10k. Contact the mfg about what parts that would require.

If I wanted to update my 18 footer I would consider adding a couple of feet and up grade the axles, springs, and tires.

If considering a new one they may give some trade also. That would be the simple approach.

I don't agree--I've been pulling 30+ foot "bumper pull" TT's for decades using 1/2 ton 4x4's and they do just fine. As with anything else, if you don't know what you're doing a Semi won't help.
