Lets start a Maintence thread, What do you do to service your machine and what towatch for. What problems did you find to do your service.

I will be following this thread closely as I want to start collecting stuff for my 50hour. I noticed a week ago there was a guy on eBay "east texas tractor" That sold complete filter sets at a reasonable price. Just looked again today and he has no more eBay listings. Maybe he is a member here?

I think the most confusing thing to me is what oils to use. The manual suggests a few and the members of this forum mention a dozen more.

I will be coming up for my 50 hr service in the early spring as well, and am interested in all aspects of the first real maintenance on my DK40. Will be following this thread closely.

At first I wanted the dealer to do this. Now after being a member here and reading like mad I figure the best way to get to know my machine is to do it myself.
I have everything but the engine oil lined up. They say 10w30 or 10w40. I wanna use synthetic for that. Can't find that weight in rotella anywhere.

I don't have the first thing lined up yet. I figured I'd call the dealer and he would get me started in the right direction, but with all of the different fluids, filters, oils, etc., I am already starting to get a headache! Somebody needs to send me a shopping list! I know I need to start saving my money!

Order filters from that guy I mentioned. He sends you a complete filter set for like $100
Then the hydraulic and front axel oil you can get at tractor supply.

Great! I'll keep East Texas Tractor in mind! Thanks!

Maybe there is a better place? I just don't know. He is the only one that I have found to sell a complete kit. No way I'm ordering filters from 6 different places just to make a set.

All i can say is get a light duty and a heavy duty torque wrench set and metric tools. I went around and rechecked every nut and bolt i could find. Overall nearly all were tight, but found 3-4 that were pretty loose and one of the loader bolts had completely fallen out.

Doing your own maintainance is real easy, and yo do keep to stay on top of any issues.

I ordered all the filters, air cleaners, etc up thru the 400 hour service period. The dealer brought them out to me when he did some on farm maint under warranty.... no shipping fees.

i buy all oil and hyd fluid in 5 gal buckets and store extra on hand at all times.

Personally, im not fooling with synthetic oils as there changed ofter enough not to worry about (in my opinion). If i was using it commercially that would be a different issue. My tractor is 1 year old and only has 119 hours on it.

Ive seen rental equipment 2 years old with 2,000 hours on them.

Good advice with loader bolts. The loader manual says to retorque every 25 hrs and my dealer recommends using blue loctite. I found a few slightly loose(1/16 turn?) over several checks. I don't have a backhoe but I suppose those are critical to watch too.

I also found a couple of front wheel bolts turned very slightly over four or five checks.

I don't know if the filters are still as tough to get off as before (my tractor was March of 2011), but mine were crazy. The hydraulic filter buckled and the entire engine oil filter housing turned when removing it.

When draining hydraulic oil also remove the drain plugs in the final drives (they aren't shown in the manual).
