48" Brush Hog Re-Assemble

Re: 48\" Brush Hog Re-Assemble

The nicks in yours looks like mine, I asked Scot about the extra bolts in the brushhog if they were to keep the blades from going back too far and getting hung and he said yes. It wouldn't be a bad idea to change the bolts out periodically on the blades to lessen the likelyhood of a bolt breaking and throwing the blade.

Did they look like the dents in the picture that is attached to this post? I've put an orange arrow to the dent in the picture.

I hope it's an optical illusion - that blade looks bent at the dent. And wow, what a long blade. My roughcut has three spindles and much shorter blades - 7-1/4 inches from the tip to the centerline of the hole. A 5/8 bolt seems inadequate to carry a blade that long. As you may recall from an earlier post, my last broken blade went through a tire - about 15 minutes before EldoNixon showed up for his demo! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Yep, those are long blades. I'll measure them on re-assembly. The blades are bent. Both are identical. I'll call PT and confirm, but I'll bet this is wrong /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Anyone else got the 48" brush hog? Could you take a look at your blades please and see if they are straight or have a slight curve up to them? It would be appreciated.

OUCH!!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: 48\" Brush Hog Re-Assemble

MR: I assume the picture of the hub was taken after cleaning it up with solvent. My assumption on the rough-cut, with similar configuration, is that there is a gallon or so of grease in there. It must be going somewhere. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nope. Never cleaned it. Haven't seen a grease fitting on it either. It's probably a mystery, just like the grease fittings on the underside of the finish mower spindles.

On the rough cut, there is a zerk at the base of each spindle. I grease it every few hours. None ever comes out anywhere. We have a big iron bowl like yours, which I suspect is slowly filling.

Re: 48\" Brush Hog Re-Assemble

Well, I went and bought some grade 8 bolts and put the thing back together today.

The first picture is of the hub under the brush hog deck, with 3 of the 5 self centering bolts installed loosely.

Re: 48\" Brush Hog Re-Assemble

Second picture shows all 5 bolts in and tightened. Also shows a grease zerk installed. The unit came without one. There was a hole for one already tapped. I used one with a 45 degree angle to make it easy to get to once everything was installed.

Duane had asked a question earlier...
Did you pull the bottom stub shaft out of the hub. Just curious whether it is just a greased bushing, or has roller/ball bearings.

I can't tell. Can anyone tell from the picture? I didn't want to take it out and look.

Third picture shows the bottom half of the coupling slipped over the shaft. The star shaped thingy at the bottom will go into this half of the coupling. It is made of hard rubber type material.
