4520 john deere
I was useing my 4520 to remove debris from a wind storm. It ran fine all day until I turned the ignition switch off. Now it will not turnover or try to start. When you turn the key all I hear is a click behind the switch. The battery checked out good, fuses all look good, if you try to arc across the starter the starter bindix will not kick in. Any ideas?

Check neutral safety switch and ensure that the pto is not on.

The lack of motion with shorting the starter leads me to think that either the starter motor is toasted, or (more likely) the starter contactor is shot. The safety circuits wouldn't prevent it from turning over, just from catching, when starting directly.

I thought the same thing, but without knowing which terminals were being shorted I think that that conclusion is premature. Will check the starter configuration on my 4320 tomorrow. Of course the Bendix could be jammed.:confused2:

How did the battery " check out good"?

How old is the tractor?

How many hours?

JD batteries are well known for dying very fast and without warning.

I pulled the starter off and had it checked and they said it was bad. So I took it to be rebuilt. The battery tested good under a load test. The tractor is 7 years old. I'm thinking that it's not the starter, But I'll wait and see. Thanks for all of your replies. I will keep you posted on the out come.

Yup, at 4 years and one month JD OEM battery died suddenly. Try finding a match for a JD battery at 7PM Friday, Labor Day weekend. Tractor Supply, local farm stores, etc., - no luck. And of course, the local JD store closed before the banks.

The good news, O'Reilly's Auto Parts had a match with higher CCA.
