I have a 2006 4320 hydro w/loader which I like very much. Don't use it a lot, mainly for mowing and as a pricey toy.

Looking at the engine today I saw the placard on the front top of the cyl. head stating power at 39kw@2400 rpm. This is higher than the 48hp advertised for this model and I wonder at the discrepancy.

It makes no practical difference, the tractor has more power than it (or I) ever need, but it did make me curious.

Can someone answer where the 48hp v. 39kw (which is about 53hp) came from?

I believe John Deere rates there tractors as PTO hp not at the engine. I may be wrong, but that is what I have heard. Anyway more power can't be a bad thing .......right?

I don't have a good explanation, but the rating of 48hp is correct per the Deere website for the engine on a 4320. That said, this engine is used in many applications - skidsteer loaders, tractors, pumping stations, etc. Best I can remember it is rated from 42-43hp on the bottom end to 72-74hp on the top end. Same block, same displacement, although different turbos and programming for fueling. I'll have to look and see what's on my 4120.

Not sure why JD specs the engines in kW, but 1 HP of mechanical = 746 Watts. If you do the math the 39 kW @ 2400 rpm spec = 52 HP mechanical (which is pretty close to the advertised 48 HP rating of the 4320.)

I believe you are correct, at least for the large tractors. Not sure why it would be any different for compacts, but could be rated at engine on smaller tractors.

The JD sticker on the engine of the tractor clearly states power of 39kW@2400rpm, or ~52.3hp. This is a 2006 model 4320 tractor.

So the discrepancy is 3.7kW or 5hp give or take. No importance at all as a practical matter, but it is interesting. Wonder which is most accurate.............

From the current JD site, 4320 specifications:

MANUFACTURER
MODEL John Deere
4320

Engine

Manufacturer John Deere 4024T

Engine HP (kW) - gross 48.0 (35.3) per ISO 97/68/EC

PTO HP (kW) - Gear transmission 39.9 (29.8) per SAE

PTO HP (kW) - Hydrostatic transmission 39.9 (29.8) per SAE

Rated engine speed, rpm 2400

I checked my 4120 and it is marked as 35kW which equates to approx. 46.9hp. That is about 5 more hp than it is rated at also. Who knows what it actually has.
gbw, For a accurate test on a 4320 e-hydro - check out the link below for the Nebraska test on a tractor like yours.

Speaking of power on the 4x20 series machines, has anyone ever noticed that the Nebraska test on all of these machines shows the hyd. pump to put out below the advertised 12.0GPM flow on the implement side?

The sticker on the engine gives max brake HP with no parasitic losses from cooling fans, alternators etc.
